KneeDrachen Posted March 19, 2019 Posted March 19, 2019 Gave the new-to-me RTP its first path aaaaand this is my tragedy for the day! What is the best way/product to polish these?
KneeDrachen Posted March 20, 2019 Author Posted March 20, 2019 LOL, this is true, guys. My thought process was to clean it entirely and this is irksome to know it isn't done. I saw a bunch of KTM owners (I had a RC390) use Jet Hot to coat their pipes, prices seem reasonable and turn around time isn't that bad.
Martyn Posted March 20, 2019 Posted March 20, 2019 Have had a few of these over the years. Persuade mechanic to take pipes off at Service. Take to local metal polishing company. Hand over special vouchers for operator to buy a beverage of his choice. Wonder at how quick the polishing wheels bring the old pipes up to as new condition. Take back to workshop................. Seriously, a professional shop will do in a matter of minutes what will take you all day, or at least it'll feel like all day..........
realshelby Posted March 21, 2019 Posted March 21, 2019 It would not be so bad if they didn't turn that hideous brown color! If really pitted I use 800 grit sandpaper and wet sand to get them smoothed out a bit. Then Happich Semi-Chrome metal polish. Best metal polish I have ever used. A cheap and very good metal polish is White Diamond. Available at WalMart in the car detailing section. Use a sturdy cloth for this. Cutting into strips that allow you to "saw" back and forth helps. Do NOT use steel wool! It embeds in the surface....and rusts. I suppose stainless steel wool would work, but I don't know where to get that.

KneeDrachen Posted March 23, 2019 Author Posted March 23, 2019 Spoke to Jet Hot, $155 for coating inside and out. If I could find a spare set I would be gold, but may just use the ST1300 in the meantime while they get coated. 1
Skywagon Posted March 23, 2019 Posted March 23, 2019 Quote This is what I use. https://www.google.com/search?q=blue+metal+polish&source=univ&tbm=shop&tbo=u&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwi_7orso5nhAhUPQq0KHXL4BEAQsxgIKw&biw=1280&bih=626&dpr=1.25#spd=5905105294437064397 I attach a soft buffer on my drill and use the above. It takes some time and it won't be perfect, but will be really nice looking. It takes me about 30-45 minutes and I do it about every 6000 miles commensurate with my service intervals. It makes a mess so don't wear your best Sunday suit. 1

Well, for the 2005-9 models BMW offered either standard stainless or optional chrome plated. I think after that chrome is standard, but in any event it's the stainless versions that turn brown. The chrome ones turn multicolored, mostly blue. The Police models would clearly have the non optional specification.
