TEWKS
Started this in another thread that it didn’t really belong in. (unless you were hanging out around the virtual fire pit ) This was yesterday but the note on the frame says it was 1960. Third row second from the right Paul Mahoney came to work on his 65th birthday and the Chief had to tell him to go home, you don’t (can’t) work here anymore. He was a funny dude, he visited the station almost daily up until his passing in 2007. He wasn’t much of a talker unless he liked you. He’d give me a grunt every now and again on his visits so I think he was warming up to me. He’s still around the station. edit While I’m blabbing I may as well throw in The Big One back in 1972. William McAllister pictured bottom row, second from left unfortunately lost his son who was a call firefighter at the gas explosion in the link. One to the right of him was Hilary McMahon. Early in my career I transported him to the hospital for an illness (can’t remember now) but man could he could Jabber about the old days on the department. Funny I just met his daughter during a smoke alarm inspection (when you sell) the other day. He sure did pass on the gift to gab. Very nice though, she really loved and missed her dad you could tell. 1 Link to comment

wbw6cos
This is more appropriate for Bama John's Tennessee bird population thread, but it is happening now. Feast your eyes on our latest edition to the front porch: 3 out of 4 hungry Purple Finch chicks. Momma has been out and about gathering food and they sure get hungry. Probably nothing going on to be concerned with but, I’d imagine some old “self preservation” instincts came rushing to the surface especially having your grand boy with you. Link to comment

Slight spidey sense, but this be Stokes county and alot of people carry fairly regular, just thought it odd, but, then again, I've seen a couple of the circle track cars drive down main street, so strange things do happen in this little country town. 2 Link to comment
TEWKS
A pretty good sized brushfire earlier today for us east-coasters. Good thing for the RR tracks, it worked as a fire break. The Great Swamp has a lot of fuel and no real access so it could have been interesting. Smoke Link to comment

TEWKS
That’s probably pretty manageable for them guys but, it would be unimaginable in size for a lot of us east coast firefighters. We just don’t see those monster fires here! If you spied the vid I posted the black smoke was from some old scattered R/R ties along the tracks. Link to comment

It started Friday @ about 10:00pm (arsonist ) We’ve been in June Gloom conditions so it’s quite surprising to see such a large scale wildfire. About 4:00 pm Saturday it flared up & they called in the Big Boys (fixed wing) to lay down Phos-Chek lines as it was heading towards structures in the Canyon (Topanga). That assault apparently didn’t last long due to visibility but the helo assault continued. Early this afternoon the weather must have changed a bit because the Big Boys were once again called in. 1 Link to comment

I did see the thick dark black smoke in the vid. Reminded me of a Desert race smoke bomb start from the 70’s. A pile of old tires & 5 gal of gas marked the start of the race & course as the wide starting field narrowed down. 1 Link to comment

In my neighborhood, they're all volunteers, and they appreciate donated items like an air compressor (for maintenance) and GPS for the truck, or an offer to help with administration duties. Pat: there's no donut shop within 30 miles, so I can't drop in with a box of donuts...wonder if I should offer to bring some BBQ to one of their weekly meetings? 2 Link to comment

TEWKS
Once the fire got into the attic area and almost like clockwork, the wind picked up, it was then deemed a defensive fire. Doesn’t look like a save but the other buildings are pretty close. One close call for these two, while pulling ceilings, a whole section came down luckily with the bulk of it missing them. 2 Link to comment
