Dave P
Hi all, 96 R1100RT, the other day my windshield would go down, but wouldn't go up. After shutting the bike off I was able to convince it to raise, but something isn't right. Hopefully it's just in need of some lubrication. Thoughts? Thanks, Dave Link to comment

Thanks, Dave Afternoon Dave LOTS of possibilities on this problem. Could be a bad relay (system has 2), could be a bad switch, could be a poor wire terminal connection, could be partially broken wire, could be the motor acting up, could be a limit switch, could be a binding condition is some of the moving parts, could be?????? If you are willing to remove the front plastic, & if you can get it to act up when testing it then using a voltmeter, or 12v test light, you should be able to isolate the problem. Otherwise, you can clean all the connector terminals, verify wire routing & integrity, lube some of the moving points, then see if it acts up again. Link to comment
AndyS
Well, as you may well know, the windscreen setup on these bikes is generally very reliable. It is controlled by the rocker switch on the left handlebar. The supply is fed to 2 off Single Pole change over relays, up in the nose fairing of the bike and 2 limit switches on the screen mechanism. The supply power comes from a 4amp fuse (F1), and we know that works OK. My first suggestion is with the power off, put some shop towel over the tank and fairing then flood some WD40 into that lefthand switch assembly and work all the switches. See if that changes things. If it does, happy days. If not, then we need to consider going deeper. It is most likely the switch, as it sees more weather than any of the other screen related items. Link to comment
BrianM
When I had the same problem, first thing I did was take off bodywork to get to relays. I swapped relays, it swapped the problem (not wanting to go up to not wanting to go down). I just ended up replacing the relays. Got lucky and didn't have to look further. If it turns out not to be the relays, DR can assist you in trouble shooting the rest of the system Edited September 27, 2018 by BrianM Link to comment
Jim Moore
Mine also had a bad relay at one point. Link to comment
Dave P
Thanks for the fast response! Yes I think I'll go after the handlebar switch first. Can I open it up and clean connections? Relays after that. Fall is a bad time to lose my electric screen. Dave Link to comment
AndyS
You can open the switch, but there are associated risks of losing springs, levers and balls.. I would go the flood lube route first. Edited September 28, 2018 by AndyS Link to comment
dan cata
Mine worked for a while after spraying some electrical contact cleaner inside the switch. Ended up by replacing both side clusters as the signal buttons started to fail to work also. Dan. Link to comment
