J. Paganel
I swear I have seen this information before, but search is failing me. My fuel gauge works maybe once every 6 months. I seem to remember this having something to do with grounds, but I can't find the exact description. I could, of course, poke at it and see if I can figure it out, but if anyone can point me to a guide, that would be nice. Link to comment

Paganel Many many reasons that an 1100 fuel level gage doesn't work, or doesn't work correctly, with the ground being one of the many possible causes. Even if it is the ground then there are a few different places in the circuit that grounding could be the causing the issue so just saying GROUND ISSUE doesn't tell much. So, tell us a LOT more about your fuel gauge not working? What does it read when it isn't working? How long has it been acting up? When did the problem start? ANy work done to bike just before problem started? Link to comment

ANy work done to bike just before problem started? It's been flaky as long as I have owned it. Actually, scratch that. Neither gauge nor low fuel light worked at all when I got it. I pulled the sender and pump unit and found that the previous owner messed up the resistor - it wasn't snapped into place. Fixed that. This made my low fuel light start working - it goes on when I have about 1/4 tank left. Gauge started showing something, but clearly less than what was correct. Then, it started to get mre and more flaky, and now it sometimes shows full, sometimes part, and most of the time nothing. Link to comment

Might be as simple as the float wiper not making good contact with the resistor, or resistor is covered with varnish from old fuel, or?? Could be a grounding issue but that would then mean the low fuel light would probably not be working correctly. Easy thing to try is to run some Techron concentrate in the fuel tank to see if that will clean up the resistor. If that doesn't work then you will probably have to remove the tank, then remove fuel sender, then disconnect the fuel pump (to protect it from running dry), then re-connect the sender to the bike's harness & work the float through it's travel to see if the dash gauge tracks with the float movement. Paganel
Might be as simple as the float wiper not making good contact with the resistor, or resistor is covered with varnish from old fuel, or?? If that was the case, would my light be working reliably? Because it is. Could be a grounding issue but that would then mean the low fuel light would probably not be working correctly. Do the light and the gauge use the same ground? Do they use the same resistor? Easy thing to try is to run some Techron concentrate in the fuel tank to see if that will clean up the resistor. Last I looked at it, it was clean. Could check it again... Link to comment

Because it is. --Possible as it uses a different end contact on the resistor. Could be a grounding issue but that would then mean the low fuel light would probably not be working correctly. Do the light and the gauge use the same ground? Do they use the same resistor? --Sort of but not the same area of the resistor. Easy thing to try is to run some Techron concentrate in the fuel tank to see if that will clean up the resistor. Last I looked at it, it was clean. Could check it again... --It wouldn't hurt & is an easy first step. Link to comment
RTmutter
I just had this problem on my 2004 R1150RT. To make a long story short, the problem for me was in the electrical connector going to the fuel tank (outside the tank, near the fuel quick disconnects). Disconnect the connector. Clean and buff the pin and socket for the ground path (on the tank side of the connector, look for the connection with 2 brown wires going into one. This is the ground path). After buffing to remove corrosion and spraying with contact cleaner, my RID fuel display is working correctly again. Not sure what bike that you have but this worked for me. Good luck.
