Bike shipping: Good/Bad, tips, recommendations?

Tomorrow we are shopping and probably picking up my son's first motorcycle. He is home on leave from the Navy in nuclear power school. We live in Washington state and we are going to need to ship it back to him in Charleston, S.C. Any recommendations for shippers, or tips on how to get it back to him without a scratch would be appreciated!

Got a pickup truck and some time to kill? In this case, I was delivering the truck and riding the bike home, but the principal is the same.

Are you suggesting he haul a truck out there behind the bike? Oh wait - I know: you're suggesting he ride the son's bike out to the east coast and then buy a truck to drive home (or another bike...or Miata...something fun!). Great idea!
