extended warrenty

probably been brought up before, but since I'm on the fence to buy or not, what's your feelings about the extended full coverage 7 year warranty. It adds about 1700 dollars according to the salesman. I am curious because I'm not too familiar with the wethead and its issues. my 07 now 9 years old is beginning to have its issues and obviously the extended warrant would mean nothing, save my pennies ( dollars) for a rainy day??

thanks

My take on extended warranties in general: Companies would not sell them if they paid out more in claims than the company takes in in premiums. In other words, most people that pay for an extended warranty are spending more than they would if they just paid for the repairs. This ignores the difference in the cost of repairs to the company versus the cost to an individual, but companies would not push them if they were not a profit center.

Personally, I never pay for insurance against small losses that I can afford to cover myself. I put vehicle maintenance in the category of a small cost that I can afford to cover. It has worked for me so far, even though I once bought a used RT that required a lot of expensive maintenance.

So the odds are you will save money without the extended warranty. But if you are someone who is willing to pay up front for the security of not having an unexpected expense, maybe you would want one.

The bike is complex, repair parts are insanely expensive and the risks are there. You may never experience a failure but discussion of odds means nothing when mechanical failure strikes YOUR bike.

My Zurich extended warranty on my old '06 RT paid me twice as much in repair claims as the original premium cost me. So Zurich took a chance and lost out big on my bike, but what are the "odds"? Unfortunately, I didn't sell the bike before the extended warranty expired -- 6 months later an even bigger $2400 repair was needed. I'll never again own a BMW without some sort of warranty/service contract.

My wife's Acura TL extended warranty paid her $5500 in repair costs over 6 years for the $1200 she paid in premium.

Can you afford $.67 a day for that safety net?

Used to be a nay sayer, but with one issue on these machines...

I used to sell extended Service Contracts too! Not warranties like the base 3 year BMW coverage. Yes, I can afford $.67 a day, which is why I would never buy an extended service contract. I am already way ahead of any repair by NOT buying them for the past 40 years. Now if you are on a tight budget, that piece of mind might be worth it.

I am hoping the new Wetheads continue to be fairly trouble free. Especially in the major repair category. So far, they have been better than any bike BMW has made since the Airheads.

Sorry for jumping in late here but I have ALWAYS had an extended warranty (realize they are not technically warranties) on all of my BMW's and would not buy a new BMW without one. I just bought a 2016 RT and for less than $1000 I was able to add 5 years to the factory 3 year warranty. That gives me EIGHT YEARS of virtually bumper to bumper coverage on my new bike. Or less than $200 per year for the added 5 years. (about $.50/day!) And spread over the 8 years it is less than $125 per year. YES it is insurance but just like any other insurance it is there IF you need it. However, if I sell the bike before the term has ended it is a selling feature that has helped me sell a bike in the past and easily transferable. OR I can redeem the unused portion for a refund. I had to use a prior bike's extended warranty once for a $385 repair that was fully covered. The plan I got for my 2016 RT is also zero deductible. Like many things in life this is a personal choice but for ME and with all the electronics on the new bikes I feel I would not want to pass up on getting one. Just my $.02 and YMMV !!

You don't have to make a decision until just before the bike gets to 36 months or 36,000 miles whichever comes first.

For me the unlimited miles for seven years is very important since I ride 38,000 to 45,000 miles per years. Sometimes more........

Who did you buy your policy from?

GT

Prior to this bike I had used Zurich which my dealer suggested and that is what I have on the 2012 GSA. But THIS bike the dealer was suggesting RPM-One which offers the 5 year on top of the dealer 3 years. So while it adds 5 onto the factory it also is unlimited mileage so if you exceed the 36K OEM then it would kick in. Worth checking out. They also offer shorter terms for less $$.

Zurich is about the best. Note the price of the insurance policy is negotiable.

The sales scum gets a commission for selling it and you can get the price way down BEFORE you buy the bike, not a much AFTER you buy the bike.

I would also call Zurich and see if you can buy it direct from them as it would be cheaper normally.

You don't HAVE to buy it from that dealer. You can even shop several dealers to get the best rate. It's an insurance policy .

well thanks for all the input, glad to know that the price is negotiable and that there are choices, even before the 36k

I'm going to a dealer tomorrow to talk price. they still want the high price for a 2106 when the 2017 is 800 bucks more, crazy !!! my 2007 ABS unit IS fried so I got to figure out what to do. !!!

If you are buying a 2016 they should be knocking about $3000 or more off list. Lots of east coast dealers are doing just that. And yes the price for an extended warranty is like a bike ...negotiable. I would ALWAYS try and buy from MY local dealer as he is the one you want going to bat for you with the warranty company. I use the company my dealer suggests since THEY have the experience with the company and the relationship on claims. As I stated my dealer in the past had used Zurich and has not pretty much moved to RPM One and when I asked why they indicated on a couple of issues RPM One has been much more flexible and reasonable. I trust my dealer and have a good relationship with them. YMMV

In your negotiations, if you are including your '07 in the deal, you won't get as good a deal obviosly as they have to fix it then resell a yet one year older bike with 100k miles on it. The other option is to get a "cash price" using your financing as using theirs they can and probably will bump up the interest rate over what you actually qualify for and keep the profit.

Line up your financing and use that to get a smoking cash deal.

Then deal with your '07.

Pay a known good independent shop to fix it cheaper then sell the bike.

Or sell it as-is which is painful to the wallet.

Or, try a dealer that won't try and suck you dry. Cycle Specialties in Modesto is very fair and the service department has lower labor rate and, they keep some used parts . They may have a used unit to fix the bike .

They may give you a better deal on a new one AND take the trade as they can fix the '07 cheaper. I think he still works there, call and talk to Gale, if not, the owner, John.

Those two only.

I don't think a cash price is an issue; the dealer gets cash from you or from a bank (unless they get a premium from a local bank's financing through a higher interest rate). But as for financing, with BMW's .9% for 3-4 years BMWFS is paying you to borrow their money if you qualify, so just keep your cash.

Link to comment

Yes .9 is free money and I would take it and run. I would borrow as much as I needed for the bike the way I want it , all accessories I wanted, extended warranty, and take it for as much time as I could get.

I got .9 on my car and it is the greatest thing next to borrowing free money there is.

Ed,

I believe that's the case now, one or the other.

A few months back, you could get both...

more really..

The BMW rebate and .09%

PLUS

$500 BMW Loyalty

PLUS

Whatever the dealer would offer as discount

PLUS

$400 BMW Auto Club or $500.00 Accessory Credit for MOA Members.

I had a deal worked out on a 2016 GSA with Bags.

$4,500 off w-.09% and a very good trade-in offer on one of mine.

I passed on it at the last moment...

Still have some regret.. such a deal

According to BMW's website/promotions, the deal currently on 2016 RT is EITHER $1750 purchase credit OR .9% financing plus $500 accessory credit.

"Purchase Credit offer cannot be combined with the promotional rate (as low as 0.9%) with Accessory Credit offer. "

That is what I thought. The deal I got in October was similar to the $1750 off and then my dealer more than matched that and was able to get the color and features I wanted. But the deals out there now are pretty sweet.

Link to comment

So you loose 1200 bucks in promotion it looks like.

Would have to look at the bike with everything you wanted on it, all the accessory's you wanted on it, and the extended warranty.

Then figure the best rate you get with your bank on a motorcycle loan, and then figure it at .9% and see what the difference is.

I am paying 3.65 on my '15 so obviously I put more down money then I would have at .9% I did not want to be upside down on the loan or any vehicle for that matter. Have to think depreciation hit.

If I was looking for a new bike all of this is tempting but I feel the improvements in the drive line are worth passing on all this and getting a 17.

Link to comment

One thing often overlooked is that while the .9% financing sounds good, the $1750 in rebate can often be a better deal. For more than the upfront price. Should be able to get well under 4% financing on a new bike. $22,000 financed at 4% for 60 months is $405.16. $23,750 financed at .9% for 60 months is $404.95. If you could get a bit under 4% you would have the lower payment that way. Why is the rebate so much better? Because you are $1750 ahead already. Bike gets totaled....$1750 less owed. Trade the bike.....$1750 less owed.

Even if the subvented very low rates offered by dealers had a significantly lower payment, that still only works out better if you keep the bike for the full term of the financing.

The ONLY way I would ever finance a bike would be if the rate was SO attractive that it would be free money. Just a personal rule that I never finance my toys. But with .9% or "0" % as had been offered last year I you can buy a 2% CD and be better off using BMW's money. But not when you lose the rebate. YMMV but IMHO debt is bad.

I agree debt is bad, but i can't buy the bike outright

the two dealers here in the bay area are not lowering their price at all. I saw a beautiful white 2017 bike and it was 900 dollars more !!! I am still wrestling with the thought of fixing the bike and then selling, but I dont have the time to really do that in depth work right now, so trading in would be a hit to the pocket but it would be out of my hair ( whats left) and the part is the real money hog. I have not tried cycle specialist, but will contact them tomorrow and see how they deal. you would think that as the end of the year comes they would want to move the 2016's. don't they pay taxes on the inventory ??? as always may thanks to all

stay tuned

Maybe it is a California thing but the east coast dealer are knocking at least $3000 off of the 2016's.

My dealer here is Charlotte had a 2016 listed for $18K and original list was $22K !

California..

I'm starting to think it might just be a mythical place...

I can hardly afford to visit, much less live there... oh well..

There are MANY 2016 RT and GS to be had here in flyover land.

I don't know, maybe not on the left coast...

The '17 RTs and GSs are finally staring to arrive here in the Midwest..

Unless there's a sizable discount on the 16s, they'll continue to sit.

Not sure know what they're going to have to do to sell them...but $4,000 off sounds about right.

You could buy the RT from elsewhere and have it shipped to you, unless CA has a rule or "special" fees to guard against that sort of subversiveness.

The extended warranty I purchased from my dealer was $1,200 and will last four years ( after the original 3 year warranty expires ) with unlimited miles , if you buy the bike new and stay within the 36,000 miles for the first three years and intend on keeping the bike for at least seven years it may be a good deal. In my case it wasn't a good deal , my 14RT has over 60,000 miles on it and the extended warranty won't kick in for another year , the only good thing is if I decide to trade in the dealer will give me an extra $250.

Link to comment

I'd note two benefits of Zurich contracts (other companies may have similar terms): If you sell the bike the extended service is transferable to the new owner -- OR Zurich will return a pro-rated refund of your premium less a $50 fee. The seller can decide if a premium refund would be more than any added value of transferring service to the buyer.

my dealer works with Aegis and swears that they work well, so after an hour of chatting and number crunching, I will take possession of a brand new 2016 next Tuesday. The extended warranty down to $1300 from $1700, a Nav V thrown in to the deal, 24k out the door. probably could have work to lower but i get to trade in my bike with the failed ABS computer and still be happy with the payments.

Thanks to all for the inputs

Happy Holidays

mine will be

Congrats! That is not too bad of a deal but so long as YOU are happy with the deal that is all that matters. Many happy miles!

fast bronze it is.!!!

I'm pretty calm right now, 3 days till I get the bike.

I did take off my PIAA ultra bright 1100's ( think thats what they were called) and would like to use them on the new bike. i know the old bike had a wire that i could tap into that had a 30 second power delay when it was off. does the new one have anything like that?? or do I tap off the battery and hope i don't forget to turn of the PIAA's, or is there a special wire set for running extra lights

thanks to all

Miguel
