Red Triangle ON

mig

Recommended Posts

last night after I started my 2007 RT I got the red triangle light on steady. I scrolled thru the dash menus and could not find anything indicating, so I rode off, after a while it dawned on me what had happened, no speedo needle and the mileage is frozen at the last reading before the fault. I stopped and restarted the bike but it did not change anything. So no fuses in this system, so what failed. I don't have a GS911 and the shop won't open till tuesday. I also Have the ABS failure that I have had for over 3 months about 1 week after the shop did a brake flush. They will not assume responsibility. Anyway any ideas what to try, disconnect the battery ??? shoot the thing ???

thanks

Miguel

Afternoon Miguel

Without a GS-911 or dealer computer it is about a guessing game.

Your speedometer/odometer issue could be tied into you ABS problem as the speedometer/odometer uses the ABS system for input.

Don't know if your bike is the same, but on my '03 the likely cause of the triangle light would be a burned out taillight. Easy to check.

This cannot be it.

On the hexhead there is a light bulb icon on the LCD display when the tail light (or any other) bulb burns out.

According to my 07 manual. The red triangle (not flashing) means: "Insufficient battery charge current" and the battery icon should also appear on the display.

not the alternator or belt or taillight, was doing some checking and the brake lights are actually ON, so its got to be related to the ABS system. Disconnected the battery and then restarted bike , same results

looking around to borrow a GS911

I think mine did this when I press on the brakes all through a startup. Then when I let go, the red triangle light goes away.

I wonder if one of your brake switches are stuck in the "on" position.

Evening NickInSac

The 2007 1200RT doesn't have brake light switches on the pedal or hand lever like the earlier I-ABS 1200RT's did.

The 2007 up uses internal pressure switches.

OK after installing a new battery , the old one was not holding voltage ( about 3+ years old, gel type ) and using the GS911 lent to me by NickinSac, all systems will communicate and report status, EXCEPT the ABS system, It has timed out and I can't read faults or the ECU. Mr dirt rider, got any ideas ??? I can run the bike but the speedo needle does not move and that is reporting as a comm fault with the ABS system also the odometer has the same fault. So is the ABS 1 integral unit or are there parts ??? Ideas,??? bullet donations??

thanks

Basically the ABS controller is one integrated unit as far as buying replacement parts is concerned.

Module Masters might have some of the parts but I don't think they will sell to the public.

If you can't talk to your ABS system with the GS-911 then you are pretty well out of luck on a quick problem identification.

Personally I would probably do a quick wiring pin-out check on the pig tail going into the ABS unit to at least verify it is getting proper 12v power into it & good ground continuity. If all OK with that then it is very likely a failed ABS module.

Maybe call Module Masters to see if they can repair yours (or possibly give you some ideas).

Hi all:

well the two dealership close to me both think their computers can read more into the problem and help identify the problem. Both don't think the GS911 can really dig thru and ping the sensors and such, so tomorrow I will take it to the closest one and have them diagnose . I looked at the web site for module masters and they state that if the board is bad, they can not repair. So I'll see where I stand tomorrow. Now seriously looking at a new RT although I really like my current one, and I just got new road pilot GT's !!! :P

Because you have a bunch of miles on that bike, expensive failures could be in its immediate future. As much as you like it, a replacement might be prudent. What about a similar RT but with far fewer miles? I bet you could find one.

That sux Mig,

CHP is auctioning of RTPs 2008 and 2009s across the street from me. They start around $2,200. I don't know if the ABS is the same or not though. Could sell the rest of the parts and recoup costs. IDK. :(

well the latest is that I had installed the new battery only to find it completely drained the next morning, so I did not make it to the dealer. But I have run some tests on the old battery which is doing ok and I placed my digital volt meter on it for about 2 hours and it did not drop off. So I recharged the new one and disconnected every farkle that I have and just hooked up the bike and the volt meter. holding at 12.3 volts. Seems to be holding a charge, so maybe I screwed something up on the switch over. And now I have another date with the dealer and his computer. been pricing 2016 bike and they are not dropping the price on them yet !!! 23 grand + out the door, cant really swing that right now, but.... I guess I will have to make a decision some time. If the motherboard turn out to be fried probably replace the bike, if not maybe take it out and try and rebuild as mentioned in the other post. I got 3 weeks before I loose my vehicle to my daughter and her school

12.3 volts is a pretty darn dead battery. You should see something like 12.6-12.8v to have decently charged battery.

Ok DR

I had the trickle charger on it, but I can throw the big boy on it and top it off, I did start the bike and the volts went up to 14 and change, so I'm confident that the charging system is ok. My biggest mystery is why the dead battery, with the bike off there should be no draw or a tiny tiny amount, would you think ??? I probably screwed it up I'm really hoping that the ecu is ok and that I can rebuild or something to salvage this otherwise I have no idea what to do with the bike if its jacked !!

Morning Mig

There will be a very low parasitic drain on your battery even with the key turned off (about 2.5 mA).

As to why your battery is going dead-- we don't have enough info to tell you much.

If it goes dead overnight again you will probably have to have the battery load tested & if OK then put a meter on the electrical system & see what your key-off parasitic drain is.

Just got back from the dealer, he hooked it up to his machine

Well ABS ECU is definitely shot, no comm whats so ever

but it also only costs $ 2000k not $ 2700. with labor about $ 2500 to replace. so tough choices coming about fixing or getting the 2016, we'll see what i can negotiate for a price.

thanks to all for the help

Nick!!!

well my head is spinning still. Walnut creek has me out the door for 24K yet the payment are over 300 / month

for 60 months. Cycle specialists in Modesto is 26k out the door but they will take my bike and it looks like they could give me 1500 for it ( yeah that's ugly, but its out of my hair) and using the 1750 cash and 3.7% financing for 4 years 252 dollars/month!!! such a discrepancy. I need to talk to each and get the real details. but i'm liking Modesto. I will have to figure this out real soon. Going Friday with the bike and well see what I come home with  I'll post what happens

I just met with a friend Monday who bought a used bike which had a non-working ABS. He got it working by jumping electrics somehow. He said the unit lost the connection with the computer and when this happened it must be rebooted to get it running. The dealers should know this, but maybe they don't. This was on a 1996 R1100RT

Morning timboaz

I think your friend was pulling on your tail-- the 1996 ABS-II system is a stand alone system & doesn't have a CAN system so it can't/doesn't talk to any other onboard computers.
