1200 MPG

DR Major

Recommended Posts

I have a friend with an early 1200 RT. He keeps it pretty well tuned, however only gets about 30mpg.

I have 07 GSA and get 38-40 @ 70+mph.

Any suggestions what he can check to improve his MPG?

Afternoon David

Not much to tell you without LOTS more info about the mileage issue.

Is it actual calculated MPG or from the bike's computer?

Is most of his riding in stop & go city traffic?

Does he do a lot of engine warm up or engine idling?

If that is highway MPG then is he a large guy or have a huge windshield.

What are his throttle & braking habits like?

Does he keep his tries properly inflated?

Is he using decent premium gasoline?

If he is REALLY getting 30mpg then there is something seriously wrong with the bike, or his riding habits, or he is running in the 90mph+ range a lot.

He is thin.

Pretty sure he checks tires.

Intown riding, to work....Don't think he's hot on gas..Maybe 20-

+each way. Not sure about warm up.. Not that cold here- Think he runs Premium, no Ethinal.

Morning David

No telling about fuel mileage in city riding, depends on traffic speed, how many stops, & how much lower gear riding, & how much idling without moving.

I run my 1200RT 10-12 miles each way to work. Most of it is freeway, at 80mph, and get about 30-35. 30 seconds to 1 minute warm up, 1.5 miles to freeway, 1.5 miles from freeway at the other end. I'm 5'11", 235lbs, and have a tall/wide CeeBaily screen on the bike. I do NOT ride with the side bags, but I do have a Givi 55 litre box on the back.

When I took my trip up to B.C. in the spring, I got about 45-50mpg at 85mph, packed with side bags, etc.
