Thanks so much for the planning, routes and challenge. I'll try to get these onto the Nav 3.

Appreciate all your efforts!

Thanks for the routes Kan and Craig. Downloaded to Basecamp and will load onto my GPS in slower time.

Haha  ... but remember Kan [sic] can ride WAY faster than me, so these routes will work for anyone!

I was just trying to see if you were paying attention.

But of course you were. I didn't think otherwise for a moment. ;)

Ken and Craig - what a "Team"! Thank you again for all the efforts you both put out for us East Coast BMWST folks!

Routes look great! I have been coming to this area to ride twice a year for over 10 years. Ken puts me on new,to me, roads that are fantastic each and every time that he has been sharing his routes with us.

With new roads to explore and Craig's "Route Smarts" game, I hope I will have time to stop during the day for food and coffee!

You're most welcome ... however, the game was a product of the team.

Sorry if I didn't partake of the WR, but I had my Elijah Craig. I will gladly help you with the WR during FART. I can guarantee there will be many other selections available.

Everybody PLEASE save some room for some Maker's Mark ... I will be lugging that enormous bottle so generously "donated" by Bud last Fall to Ashville and I have no intention of taking it back home! :/

Oh, and Craig... looks like Angela & I will also be departing at some point Saturday. She has other pals that live in Boone who have asked us to come stay with them Saturday night.

Thanks for lugging that bottle around!

While I'm not even admitting to planning on FARTing, I hope the rest of you will empty the bottle.

Hey guys, I didn't download your routes so I may be telling you something you already know. (most likely) Just north of Asheville there is an interesting road that i've been on a couple of times that I thought i'd mention. Head north out of Asheville on I-26 to exit15 NC-197 you will run into about three miles of manageable gravel but then you come to a section of S-curves that is just unbelievable. I swear the road construction supervisor must have gone home sick for the day and the road-crew that were more than likely bikers, got to work.

NC-197

It's actually 4.1 miles of gravel, but worth it if you don't mind the gravel which I find is usually not tightly packed. I usually leave gravel out of routes....usually

Pat,

The first time I came upon that road, Chris Kinney and I were both on R1100S's. We crested that last hill of the paved section waaaaaaaaay north of the speed limit. Manageable? Maybe for a GS!! At warp speed on the R1100S it was a definitely pucker moment! UHG.... :dopeslap:

Craig,

It's almost like you're encouraging us to stop and take pictures. That is a twist.

Now is that 4.1 with or without wheel spin?

Was pretty definitely sure I wasn't gonna show you guys anything new but where the no gravel was mentioned, thought I'd toss it out there.

Probably just the Burrito I had for dinner last night.:dopeslap::grin:

Thanks. I didn't grasp that before. I'll change that in the next list update. Happy to hear it.

Open the GDB or GPX file in your software

- Then make duplicates of each route (usually a right click will show the option)

- Change the color of all the Duplicate routes (usually double click, then go to “Info” and look there)

- Note the mileage,

- Select the original route and click Re-calculate. The mileage should stay the same.

- If the route mileage is different:

-- Look for the color you changed the Duplicate route to.

-- You will need to add a Waypoint or Via point to the Original route to make it match the Duplicate route. Once the two routes are the same, delete the Duplicate route, then load the re-calculate Original route(s) onto your GPS.

I've been GPS-less for a few years until my new Zumo 660LM arrived last night, so I apparently suck at this. I updated the Zumo's maps and tried the above, following along easily. However, my recalculation of the original route (step 5 above) results in, say, a 30% reduction in mileage. A review of the route shows that it is drawn as the proverbial crow flies on Basecamp - not following the contour of the roads - only a straight line to the next waypoint. So, I hit undo, and stopped playing with the routes for now.

I guess my question is, how do I get the routes to snap to roads in Basecamp so I can review them for adjustments? According to the above, do I simply add one waypoint/via point to each route to accomplish this? It seems to be behaving like a track, and not a route.

Jake, it sounds like you updated the maps on your Zumo but not in Basecamp. You will need to do this to get the routes to match as Basecamp has no detailed maps when you first download it.

Well, I never admitted on planing to FART.

Now it is official, I will not be as I will be seeing a specialist to have my right eye lasered to clean up the cloudiness causing me to have 20/100 corrected vision at this time.

Oh well, drink up the Maker's Mark and raise a glass to me.

Dang! You were foiled again, Bud! Just when you thought you'd outsmarted Mr. Fate! :(

Ahh, then I'm on the right track and didn't know it. That update is going on as we speak back home. Thanks Chris.

I hope that is all it is. I had a problem with this a while back with my Zumo 550, despite both maps being updated and showing they were both updated. Eventually Garmin gave up on me and sent me a refurbed unit. (Edit: At a cost of $150 to me, that is!)

Tochna! Loading the Zumo map to Basecamp turned everything on as Chris predicted. I did have to delete the imported BMWST routes and reload, but that was easy. Thanks Craig for your guidance, as maps 1A-C needed a bit of correcting but your notes made that simple (otherwise I would have turned into a few people's yards). It felt nice to ride those roads from my laptop!

Excellent job Ken - TIGTBSMF!

I MUST make a humble suggestion for Route 2C Banner Elk-RRI ;) . This is the post-lunch return route from Banner Elk. At the waypoint marked NC Shady Valley-1 it turns left from 421 on to 91. I highly suggest continuing up 421 to cover the best part of The Snake. Ride up to South Holston Lake and make a U-turn and do it again from the other side - this adds about 21 miles to the trip. Then get yourself a pin at the gas station/convenience store in Shady Valley (if it's still there), cuz you just earned it.

My life is in flux.

We are going to N FL next week to look at a sailboat for Nancy. If we buy it, it will mean no UN for me next year as we will be in the North Channel of Lake Huron sailing with 40 or so other sailboats that make it an annual event.

Given the amount of time I've committed to sailing next summer, I won't have a lot of extra time for riding and am considering selling either the GS I just bought or the RT I still have in the garage.

I look forward to many weeks on the boat with Nancy as sailing is her passion and I enjoy being on the water with her. We most likely will also spend several weeks this winter on the water in FL.

Like a good friend of mine says "It's all good!"

After all, we will celebrate our 48th Anniversary tomorrow.

Thanks, Frank. I know you'd told me Claire's name at RS, but I'd forgotten. Was going to ask. These will be reflected on the next list update.

Agreed ... there's nothing wrong with doing the best section one direction then turning around and doing it the other direction ... that's what I do fairly often even though it's not on my planned route. It's not at all the same road the opposite direction AND ... it ROCKS both ways!

I'm FARTing Thursday-Sunday!

If anyone has a cancellation before block rate expires please let me know at budt44@gmail.com . I was only able to get block rate for Saturday night.

Thanks!

Beth and I did this at theBlowing Rock UN. Pretty nice. It was raining so not too many vehicles. We ended up stopping at the store 2x.

Well Bud,

Sorry to hear you won't be back through for a while, but change is inevitable. It sounds like you two have a very exciting journey ahead. Enjoy it to the max!

Perhaps one day when you're not planning to come through here again, you will anyway.

Cheers!

Happy 28th to come!

My wife and I celebrated our 48th anniversary on Aug 5th. That said, thankfully she is not into sailing.

Bud, I am sorry you will not be at FART and very dissappointed you likely will not be going to the UN next year! I certainly hope you plan on keeping one of the two bikes and that we will see you at another BMWST event soon!

I'm one lucky guy. I married way UP. Nancy is the best thing that ever happened to me and I know it.

She's getting pretty excited to see the boat next week and bring it home and make it ours!

Happy wife, happy wife.

I"m still keeping one bike or the other so I will still be riding. In fact, I just bought a pair of Ohlin's for the RT in case that is the one I decided to keep.

I'm miss seeing all of my friends at FART. I really wanted to see FOOT's new GSA, plus hang out with everyone when the day is done.

Who knows? START next year??????

It's all good.

As of right now, our block is again full. I know of only 1 person who definitely wants a room. While I can check to see if we could again increase our block by another couple rooms, considering our block period ends next 8/24 anyway ... I ask that anyone still needing a room simply post that they are looking to split a room with someone and also anyone looking to split a room with someone simply post that fact as well.

This is what I get for procrastinating. smack.gif

I decided to call this morning anyway, and even though our block of rooms was all reserved, the Very Nice Lady on the other end of the line gave me the group rate for a room that was outside of this block. She said she'd be willing to do the same for at least a few other people. So if you're looking for a room for the event, give it a try.

Link to comment

Also keep in mind, that if you are a AMA member, you can get a 20% discount at Red Roof Inn of the normally price outside of the reserved Block.

Bud,

Let's be careful working with fire around that new boat. Right? ;)

Hey now, it wasn't fire, it was epoxy!

Will be happy to send a photo, after all, w/o a pic it didn't happen, right?
