John Nielsen
Today my '97 R1100RT with 54000 miles began to give me fits in that it would not downshift w/o fuss or grinding. Got home, inspection of the gear change lever found the rear adjustable hinge point fastener finger loose. Apply some locktite, tighten and it works like new again. Something to check periodically. JamesW
Hi John, Just be glad you have a '97RT with the good old cable operated clutch and not an 1150RT with its god awful and totally un-necessary hydraulic clutch with associated slave cylinder ($50 to replace if you do the work yourself) that is prone to leak brake fluid and if you are really un-lucky you might get to replace the clutch assembly Oh, and I would much rather shift your '97 than my '04RT. I know this because I have two other beemers that have the cable operated system. Now let me tell you what I really think....... Link to comment
AndyS
However James, those 1100 clutch actuating arms have been known to shear off! Link to comment
MontanaMark
Be sure to check the selector rod as well. I've had the locknut come loose which caused the rod to separate from the shift lever. A little locktite there won't hurt, either. Hate getting stuck in 5th gear in town... Cheers, Mark Link to comment
