A New England GS Scouting Ride 2

TEWKS

Recommended Posts

Greetings all,

I've added the word Scouting to the title because it's been a few years since completing this entire route. In other words, there could possibly be an "oh crap, we should have gone that-a-way" tossed in just for fun. :)

This is an adventure themed ride that I planned last year but was cut short due to me riding over my head on my dirt bike. :P Anyway, It's designed to take you off the beaten path and maybe break a sweat in between riding some of the lesser traveled roads in New Hampshire & Maine.

The ride will start at the Burger King on West St in Ashland NH and end in Bar Harbor ME. It will be approximately five hundred miles give or take, not including your ride home from Bar Harbor. I'm estimating that a little less than half will be on gravel roads. The gravel sections of the route I've been on in the past were all well maintained so it shouldn't be a difficult ride even for large adventure bikes.

Requirements

1) A dual sport or adventure motorcycle.

2) A tent & sleeping bag.

3) Hiking shoes/sneakers

4) Five days & four nights of your time

5) A good attitude and a sense of adventure.

Highlights of the ride

1) A quick warm up hike to the top of Rattlesnake Mountain Trail.

2) Lunch with the Secret BBQ Society.

3) Camping & cooking under the stars at Cupsuptic Campground.

4) A boat ride out to and a hike up Mount Kineo on Moosehead Lake.

5) A Lobster lunch at Trenton Bridge Lobster Pound.

6) A ride to the top of Cadillac Mountain in Arcadia NP.

7) A wade or swim at one of the most beautiful beaches in the State of Maine. (Sand Beach)

8) Night Life in Bar Harbor.

Dates for the ride will be

7/5/14....... Camping at Cupsuptic Campground

7/6/14...... Camping or lodging at historic Piston Farm.

7/7/14...... Camping at Lilly Bay State park

7/8/14....... Hotel in downtown Bar Harbor

7/9/14....... Your route home

Meeting time at B/K is 8:00am on 7/5/14

GPS files may be available if I can figure out how to email them.

Should be fun, let me know if I can help out with any details.

That sounds like fun.

But I don't think I will be able to make it this year!

If you repeat this ride next year, let me know.

I have always wanted to ride to Maine. I lived there in a previous century.

Love to have both you guys come along! I think I said this last year at one point, I do realize time is valuable and the effort it takes to get up this way is huge. So, I guess what I'm saying is, this is a no pressure invite. ;)

Sounds like fun. If I weren't going to SnowShoe I'd

consider it. After all its only 1400 miles there and back.

Take some pictures!

Hey Roger, I have a route through the ONF to blackwater inn that RoadScholar swears is GS friendly...

Matt, we should ride it sometime. Unfortunately

I'll have someone with me Saturday who's not on

a bike I'd take off road. Plus I put PR4's on it

to make the highway miles go smother.

Wow, is that a body bag on the back?

Well um....of course not. How's that, sound convincing?

Actually, my lodging for the night. :)

You know you'd be very welcomed Craig! Maybe next year. ;)

Let's backtrack one day from Bar Harbor.

See the white speck in the dark green on the mountain?

Alan, I hope to do this again next year for sure. I'll have it down a little better as far as the exact dirt roads I had in mind by then.

If anyone was thinking about doing this ride with me this year I have to make an announcement.

I have to be back home on the night of the 8th, so I have to cut the Bar Harbor stop over. Obviously doesn't mean you couldn't finish the ride there but I can't. Yes, bummed but could be worse, I guess.

Pat, I've been looking for a way to come. I just cannot. BBQs and all are in the way. I am for sure interested in a rain date or fall version of this ride.

Understand Ed, thanks for even considering it. BBQ in September sounds good to me, I may even have the RT back by then.

Ok Bill, you got me with that one, pretty GS safe looking. ;)

But, Jim still to this day does a #%{¥*€# funny impression of himself foot paddling his Triumph through some of that insane Florida sugar sand. Ok, we don't need to mention that he fell back and took the wrong cougar path but hey, that's besides the point.

Embarrassment emoticon anyone? Thankfully, I don't have ten, ok five, no scratch that, not even two guys at the moment that have actually signed on because...it looks like I'm going to be in civil court on the second, third and possibly the seventh of July. Then back on the ninth is why I originally canceled Bar Harbor. This news is rolling in only hours before I type this.

So, it looks like only one overnight in Rangeley on Sat and back home on Sun unless, court finishes up on Thursday the 3rd.

And no, I'm not a lawyer and no I'm not in trouble.

Sorry, this is the second time I had to cut plans on this ride. :(
