Lostviking1
I was just curious who has the most miles on thier hexhead so far. I am trying to decide between R1150GS (Used) and th 12GS. Thanks. Link to comment
Marty Hill
I had 33k on my '05 12gs and 7k on my '06 12gs. About 1k on other 12gs's. 1 burned out light bulb. Get the hexhead...lots better!!! Link to comment
RichEdwards
23K on my '05 GS. A burned-out lightbulb as well. Marty--think this lightbulb flaw could lead to a recall? Link to comment
Marty Hill
Do you know any good lawyers? Link to comment
steveknapp
Get the hexhead...lots better!!! Agreed! It's night and day improvement over the oilhead. Link to comment
FIRST_BEEMER
2005 R1200RT 22K. 1 headlamp bulb in 6 months of ownership. Link to comment
Bob Palin
It's night and day improvement over the oilhead. Maybe day, but with all those bulbs burning out I doubt it's night better Link to comment
HuskyMick
like to add I had a bulb blow at 12000 miles and a new gearbox !! now going in for a new engine cover and screen mounts at 16000 miles Link to comment
sardineone
Only 1300 miles on my R1200ST, but they have been very good ones. Link to comment
GelStra
5K on 05 12GS. Replaced battery 600 miles. No burned out bulbs. Link to comment
artig
32,000km (20,000 miles) on an early '04 GS. Two blown headlight bulbs and one blown parking light bulb. Sqealing front brakes. Lost covers from the frame pivot points. Rusty handlebar bracket bolts. Frame paint rubbed off by boots on left-hand side. That's about the total list of problems. Link to comment
Marty Hill
Arne, Those were my blown bulbs. I switched them when you weren't looking. Link to comment
artig
So that's why you get so many miles on that GS. Riding all over the country and traveling overseas just to put blown lightbulbs in GSes. Did you have to change the parking light as well? It got me confused. The panel said there was a bulb failure at the front, so naturally I thought it was the headlight bulb I'd put in a week earlier. Got a new one. Ready to put it in. Found that the headlight was still working. Only then realized that the parking light was not working. Link to comment
Marty Hill
Haven't had a parking light go out yet. I hear they are a bit harder to change. Hard to believe that this time last year I was not bored in atlanta. Miss NZ. If you ever come this way...you have a place to stay. Hi to Ilsa. Link to comment
artig
Thanks, Marty. Ilse says hi. And you're welcome back here any time. I looked at changing the parking light bulb myself, but decided that with only two days to go until the 30,000km service, it would be a dealer job to change it. So I don't know exactly how easy or difficult it is. At the service they were also supposed to fix the squealing brakes. Which they did to their own satisfaction. With a fix that lasted almost a whole day. Obviously I asked if they had applied the official BMW fix. They hadn't heard of it. It turns out that BMW NZ had received the details and the parts to fix 10 bikes about 6 months ago, but had forgotten to inform their dealers. They were also supposed to update the software in the bike. The BMW NZ tech specialist spent almost all day at the dealer trying to get their fine computer gizmo to work, without any success. I'm still waiting for them to get it working, and to try it on another bike before they do any irreparable damage to mine. Link to comment
Marty Hill
Hard to understand why they do not have the proper info. Link to comment
sjn7708
I knew of 2 1200GSs that had early transmission problems which the dealer replaced. One of the owners traded for an 06 GS and hasnt had any issues since. These were early production bikes, supposedly no problems with later production bikes. I have not had any issues with my GS or RT. Link to comment

Stephen H
11 months .... 17000 miles (27000km) 3 front tyres / 7 rear tyres (includes a couple of punctures) Both low beam bulbs ... and about 1 gallon of oil between changes All in all ... a great bike Link to comment
ChrisL
HuskyMick Small question why did the screen mounts need replacing on your RT Regards Link to comment
HuskyMick
The plastic olives had worn so at low speed with the screen down it would bang around. It was so bad that it had around 2 inches of play if you tried to move it while holding it at the top of the screen. Hope that helps Link to comment

mistercindy
16K on my '05 12GS. 12K by the previous owner, 4K by me since October 2005. Issues: - Replaced cluster at 13,184 miles (button to reset clock didn't work) - Burnt out low beam bulb at 15,700 miles (last Saturday) Link to comment
Marty Hill
Another dip beam bulb...Rich is right. It must be a design flaw. Link to comment
artig
Thanks for the info guys. This has helped me with my decision. Inquisitive minds want to know what the decision turned out to be. Link to comment
Lostviking1
'06 Blue R1200GS, Extremely low mile demo. At what I felt was a good price. Down side is I can't pick it up until the end of March (For demo rule reasons). But it's been snowing here all week anyway, so I can wait. Link to comment
artig
Congratulations! I'm sure you'll enjoy it. I thought hardy vikings would ride in any weather. Although I assume my forefathers were vikings, I still much prefer living in a place with no snow at all, and riding weather all year round. Link to comment
Lostviking1
I can handle the cold. It's he massive amount of road salt they use here in NY that concerns me. Beside all the "Old Vikings" buffered their pain with booze. Ok in a boat not so good on a bike. Walt. Link to comment

While I've never ridden the 1150GS, I did own an R1150R, and the difference between the 1150 and 1200 powerplant is remarkable. Its faster, very smooth, with a powerful pull (speeding up to 5,000 RPMs in 2nd through 4th is a dream), better 6th gear (not the 1150's highway gear), etc... And its light (even lighter than my R1150R) so you can really flick it around. You'll love it. Link to comment
