Press Demo Ride Stories

My dealer called and said that 2014 RTs were in New Jersey and would ship out to dealers next week. BMW did this on the "down low". They were included in a shipment that was thought by dealers to be only GSs. BMW decided to ship sold (pre-ordered) bikes before demo bikes to dealers. My bike should be in my hands in 4 weeks. All of a sudden I care about weather on the East Coast.

From the 2014 RT press kit and a Motorcyclist spec list :

____________________2012______2014

Transmission ratios

I___________________2.38______2.438

II___________________1.7_______1.714

III__________________1.3_______1.296

IV__________________1.07______1.059

V__________________0.94______0.943

VI__________________0.85______0.848

Final Drive Ratio_____2.62______2.91

Even the tallish first gear on the 2005-2013 RT would be easier to live with if it had a wet clutch that could tolerate more slippage.

Thanks Larry. That wet clutch looks to be a good idea. So I don't understand the numbers...is the wet head taller or shorter in first gear? Is the difference even relevant or is the clutch the bigger factor?

Yes, that's the same link brought up in the other thread. Spectacular footage of the two new R bikes!

Looking at this again I've come to an ugly conclusion, that is, that they are both equally desirable to me. :dopeslap: Help!

Pat,

I'll help.

My trailer only carries one bike, so, I've decided to get the 1600 out of your way for you...

you'll have room for the RT and not have any temptations to ride the K.

After all, what are friends for?

:lurk:

Watching that Video - Any Ideas why the 'Angel Eyes' appear to be flashing in some shots, and constant in others?

Andy, copied this from ADV, seems believable.

I noticed this in another online video somewhere, of the RT, not the GSA. Why do the LED "rings" seem to flicker on/off intermittently? Almost like there's a loose connection somewhere. Anyone else notice this or are my eyes going bad on me?

LED's have a hard time changing brightness natively. To make it appear less than full bright, they are modulated (turned on and off again at high frequency). This is commonly called pulse width modulation. The greater the off time to on time ratio, the dimmer the lamp appears.

We can't see this anymore than we can see the rapid change of any house lamp working on alternating current, but the discrete frames of a camera can make it quite apparent. You'll often see it with LED tail lamps - when just the tail lamp, it will appear to flash but will appear solid when the brake lamp is used, since the tail lamp is made dim and the brake lamp is full on.

I see this on some of the car shows on TV as well as some car videos on You Tube. I think the shows do it for effect and it's not an actual function of the bike in this case.

Eric, I realize I did not really answer your question and did not provide sufficient information, since I did not find the Primary drive ratios (crank rev/clutch output rev). In searching that out I found that there was a slight gearing change (overall lower) between the 2005-2009 and the 2010-2013 models. (Explains that little wheelie on the 2010 I rented in LA.) My 2007 edition maintenance CD provided the 2006 ratios; the 2010 numbers are from a post on another forum.

2006 2010 2014 2006 2010 2014

Primary 1.824 1.737 1.65

1st gear 2.277 2.375 2.438 10.882 10.808 11.706

2nd gear 1.583 1.696 1.714

3rd gear 1.259 1.296 1.296

4th gear 1.033 1.065 1.059

5th gear 0.903 0.939 0.943

6th gear 0.805 0.848 0.848 3.847 3.859 4.072

Final Drive 2.62 2.62 2.91

Sorry about the formatting, I can't figure out how to get things lined up. The numbers to the right of first and sixth gears are (I think) the number of engine revolutions per each wheel revolution in those gears, for 2006, 2010 and 2014 in that order. It looks like BMW lowered the overall gearing again. I doubt first gear will be considered "too tall" anymore.

Now we can wonder what the gas mileage will be...

Larry, thanks for all the investigation you did. Great information. I suspect the new RT will be easier to manage at slow speeds and starting up a hill loaded up. I still smell the clutch on occasion on my 2005 when the wife is on the back and we are riding stop and go on all the hills around here. Wet clutch and lower first gear should help.
