litigator Posted August 29, 2012 Posted August 29, 2012 I'm thinking of getting one. 27K miles. What is the low down?
smiller Posted August 30, 2012 Posted August 30, 2012 Well I assume you know the good stuff so I suppose you mean what are the quirks? Most of the bugs were worked out of the slant-K bikes by the advent of the 1300 but there are a couple of things (as there always are with BMW bikes): 1. Check that the 'jump guard' has been installed. This is a small part that prevents the cam chain from jumping a tooth if the hydraulic tensioner fails (this was an issue on the early slant-K bikes but the tensioner has since been upgraded so it's not much of an issue anymore, but the jump guard is inexpensive and cheap insurance.) 2. Check the clutch for smooth & quiet operation. There have been some issues with clutch basket wear and if you need a new one you're looking at $2k in parts alone. 3. Check for any steering wander or better yet, raise the front wheel and check for any play in the ball joints. Early failure of the ball joints has been an issue in some K12/13 bikes. Lastly... better figure in the cost of a good radar detector because you're gonna need it...
RAINEY Posted August 30, 2012 Posted August 30, 2012 What year? They are great bikes and very smooth. However, I though the 2007 with 32K on it was a little buzzy for a 4 banger. It pulls hard and fast in a straight line and seems to have plenty of power in reserve no matter what gear you go into a corner with. I went out riding the 07 K1300GT with my friend who was riding a 2011 Kawasaki Concours 14. Once I got on the Concours I realized the K1300GT wasn't very agile in corners and slalom. The Concours was picky about what gear you were in going into a corner and liked higher RPM's. I ended up purchasing a new 2012 R1200RT because I didn't need the warp speed the 1300 offers and wanted the better handling of the RT. Good luck! You will enjoy the 1300 just the same
smiller Posted August 30, 2012 Posted August 30, 2012 The K12/13 turns about 1k rpm higher in high gear than the other big GTs which is why it has similar 1/4 mile times but trounces them in roll-on numbers. The always there power of the slant-K bikes is something to be experienced (and enjoyed.)
litigator Posted August 31, 2012 Author Posted August 31, 2012 It's a 2010, and I got it today. Awesome power and handling. I love my boxers, but I'm open to this new world.
Sharif Posted August 31, 2012 Posted August 31, 2012 The best part is the induction music approaching redline in third!
