[BRAKE FAILURE] light won't go off and rear tail light won't go on.:)

2006 1150 GSA 62,000 miles.

Driving to work the BF light(on the dashboard) came on while I was riding along at about 70mph.

I was thinking I may need to stop so I applied some brake and everything felt great.

When I parked I checked the rear tail light cause I heard the BF light comes on for all sorts of things including burned out lights.

Sure enough the light was out. When I got home I found I had one these http://adventuretech.ca/index.php?p=shop . I ordered another one and replaced it. Still no tail light. I bought a replacement bulb from BMW, still no tail light.

I checked the fuses and they look okay.

What else?

Prolly a CANBUS gremlin Whip :( .

Have you checked the wiring?

Did the 1150's have CANBUS?

And I did check the wiring in the tail light area and it looks good.

1150 engine doesn't match up to 2006 model GS. You have a 1200 hexhead there or an earlier 1150 GS oilhead?

Added: you mention fuses that kind of points to oilhead (non CanBus)

OK there is such a thing, must have been a very late 05 build just before model changeover. (I learn something new every day)

If you are talking fuses then it probably wouldn't be a CanBus system.

Your bike should have the late oilhead I-ABS brake system (at least I think it should have).

That means that IF you burn the "tail light" bulb out it brings the brake light on at about 1/2 power to replace the tail light & then turns the dash warning light on solid (non blinking).

If you have a brake light & no tail light then your problem is probably in the ABS controller or you have some sort of grounding issue in the rear light socket.

First, put a new proper tail light bulb in then ride the bike a short distance to allow the ABS to re-set & see the new bulb.

If still no workie --

If you have a test light see if your rear socket has power to the tail light (engine running) & brake light (brake applied) then power the test light from a battery circuit & see if your rear socket has a good solid ground.

It does have the wizzy brake servo assist whatevers. I kinda like em.

I do have brake lights, but no tail light.

I will ride it around with the replacement bulb and see if everyone can make friends again.

I will update tomorrow.

If the ABS controller was having issues would I be able to tell a difference in the brakes?

Whip,

regardless of how they look, replace the bulb(s).

No guarantee but I've seen it fix that problem.

Who knows.

Yes, but only if it effected the brake apply side. If something wrong with the light apply part that shouldn't be notable in the stopping function.

As a rule anything that effects the braking or ABS function should give you a steady general warning light with a flashing or steady ABS light on also.

As far as general malfunctions go JUST a steady lit general warning light usually points to a taillight issue.

DUH!

Assumed it was your crappy typing Whipster LOL!

I'm with Tallman, try another bulb, if not, check the wiring and bulb socket!

I have tried a new bulb....and the BF light is not blinking.

It stays on all the time.

Well it (the ABS controller) thinks you have a good bulb.

You didn't pop fuse #2 with all your fooling around did you?

Anything is possible.
