St0mp Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 ok i been looking at gps solutions to my r1100rt 99. that zumo 220 for the money its junk not doing that so i started looking at the 660 @ 650$ then i read life on a zumo is only around 5 years. from the info that i have collected on here and bmwmoa. plus i have mounting issues. I would like it mounted top center. to find a mount that is not going to be 150 or more that will mount in that area is like next near to impossible atm found one from gagetguy but that is way overpriced. So i started looking at other options and this is the thought. With the cost of tablets and performance's of these things getting better and better why not just buy say like a 10" asus transformer tablet i found one for 470$ that has gps anyway you want it plus blue-tooth wi-fi plus the crap ton of added features u can do with this thing for 470$ and i know they have a crap ton of android devices that will monitor your engine performance that can plug into say a transformer or android device. so you can see rmp and temps. so why not just replace the dash with a 10" android? its over 150$ cheaper then the zumo 660 and can do so much more. Ps i found a mount for this i think i could make something up to support it from a r1100rt but it would take up the entire dash but if i can see my speed temp and rpm's do i need the dash anymore? i can mount it above the gauge lights but it would cover the tech and speedo. ill be able to display both on the tablet. I know i will get more then 5 years life out of a asus product maybe not garmin but asus i will
Quinn Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 Sounds like you could mount it in the clear map pocket of a tank bag. ----
DiggerJim Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 I'm looking at doing that with my Nexus 7 (tank bag mount or maybe off a Ram mount from the center of the steering head). It's a 7" which is fine but I need to modify the gloves to allow for touch use. Power is easy - it's a USB connector. Mapping has Co-Pilot available where the maps are on the device and don't need a wireless connection like Google Maps. Not sure about routing though - I'm running dual Zumo 550s which are good for rallies but I'd like more of a "bigger picture" when I'm routing on the fly.
St0mp Posted August 26, 2012 Author Posted August 26, 2012 yeah but if i used a tank bag it would put the issue of me looking down at the gps. i want to keep my eyes up. That's why i'm having a hard time finding a gps mount that i like thats not over priced. But i guess i could start off like that to make sure i get everything i want on the screen. before making the move to the dash i guess. I'm not a big fan of tank bags on my bike i think the way they stack up so high on the tank makes the bike ugly. I think it also would get annoying to have something stacked up in front of you that you need to look over all the time. plus to me it would make me feel confined to the bike or like if i dont have much space
marcopolo Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 Would you even be able to see it in daylight?
elkroeger Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 I don't mean to be a jerk, but you've gotta get some help with your grammar. I stopped reading after the first line.
Hightower Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 I have a samsung galaxy tab and have used it in the map pocket. Worked fine with bluetooth and have music is a plus, but i can t see the screen. The glare was terrible.

Worked fine with bluetooth and have music is a plus, but i can t see the screen. The glare was terrible. Mounted in a Ram mount or similar and you could use a Glarestomper (or make one similar yourself out of velcro & a black polypro notebook cover). Glarestomper offers one for the Kindle/Nook but that's the 7" tablet size (good for the Galaxy Tab but not for the OP's 10" tablet).
Gruesome Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 I think you want a small GPS very close to your line of sight, not down by your instruments or tank bag. I have a Garmin 60csx on a tall (5 1/4") RAM mount; it's in my field of view just a bit left of straight ahead. On a bike you simply don't want to take your eyes off the road long enough to look at a GPS. (Actually, even in a car you don't want to do that, which is why I think the center console mounted navigation systems are crap. But that's a different topic.)
St0mp Posted August 27, 2012 Author Posted August 27, 2012 Sorry elkroeger, I dont mean to be a jerk. but the topic is not grammar. sorry that i got sick about 5 years ago, and caused memory issues with multi lesions and TBI's makes grammar a pain. ill make sure ill look you up when i go to a English lesson forum. maybe you would like to help correct my little finger and ring finger as well. Wile my doctors are amazed i can still do the things i can do. i will make sure to tell them that its not good enough for ya man. Anyway back on TOPIC (after all this is what the question was asked and most of the reply s are about.) I just ordered the tablet. Still got to find a tank bag for everything i figured it was best to do in steps. But this way i can make sure it will work before i start putting holes all over my dash. always wanted to do something different on my bike maybe a full dash replacement with a tablet. i think it could turn into something neat. If i can pull it off clean. bracing in this 99 rt on the dash really sucks. I think im going to have to make something to brace it with the frame and then go up from there. But thats another topic. now i just need a tank bag that will fit my bike and a 10" tablet. i thought about the glare issue when picking out the tab so hopefully its minimal. it has features for anti glare P.S. this is what is on its way ASUS Transformer Pad Infinity TF700T. hopefully i dont get sun glare, ill find out
algover Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 Ya might also look into any possible legal issues with the speedo being blocked. Yes, I realize you'd have it on the tablet, but that might not be enough for a LEO. Better to know ahead, than get busted.
St0mp Posted August 27, 2012 Author Posted August 27, 2012 Man i did not even think at all about that. thank you for bringing that up. Man that almost crush's the idea. i do go state to state a lot. so its defiantly going to be a tank bag item only. cant believe i didn't even think about it that way. You dream crusher you! J/k. I figured i was overlooking something simple like that. Thank you all. just need to find a tank bag for this bad boy now.

szurszewski Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 I like the idea, but I think you'd have to do some sort of sunshade, like they do for a lot of motorcycle gps units, to make it readable in all conditions. I use my iphone as a gps, and the screen is useless if the sun is to my back, and hard to see in some other light conditions. It is VERY easy to see at night, but sometimes it can be a bit too bright - even in the reverse contrast "night mode." Another thought, apart from the possible legal issues about which I have no information, is that the speed displayed on a gps tends to lag a bit, at least in my experience with both stand alone units and phones/tablets running gps software, so while you are cruising it might be very accurate, but while accelerating or slowing, or in traffic that has a lot of speed changes, it will often be wrong.
elkroeger Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 ...sorry that i got sick about 5 years ago... Sorry for your troubles. I can't know any of that from your post. What I do know, is that you're able to type and sign up on a bulletin board, and you're looking for advice. If you can get that far, you can slow down and communicate a little more clearly. Most of us do our best to offer good advice. Don't make us work at deciphering your question. As you say, the topic is not English. But there is no topic without it. It's all just gibberish.

Bill_Walker Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 The Gadget Guy mount is expensive, but it really is the best one out there by far. I tried some others before I ended up with the GG.
Camhead in STL Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 Sew a little silver thread through the tip of the gloves to allow capacitive touch-screen use. http://j.mp/SilverThread
DiggerJim Posted August 29, 2012 Posted August 29, 2012 Sew a little silver thread through the tip of the gloves to allow capacitive touch-screen use. http://j.mp/SilverThread Just got Farkle Fingers. More expensive (although only $5/finger or per glove - I only use one on each pair of gloves). They're like slip on finger cots and no needle holes added to the gloves
TEDZ Posted August 30, 2012 Posted August 30, 2012 The map pocket on a tank bag can get very hot on a sunny day. That could have an adverse affect.
St0mp Posted September 1, 2012 Author Posted September 1, 2012 *update i got my 10.1 in. tablet. On sun glare just testing around outside today don't look bad. Still no tank bag big enough. Prob going to take back to get a 7 in. If i can find one i like. Now what i have found is this. http://www.twistedthrottle.com/trade/productview/7481? This will hold a 7 in. tablet. This should hook you up and your nexus tablet. Also stumbled on this today. for a normal gps mount top center where i been wanting it. http://www.ebbo.org/gpsmount.php thinking about trying this out but just take a ram ball and mount it on the bar. Then get a ram mount aqua box and just slip a cheap gps in it. and just keep tablet in bags. I keep telling the wife if i just get the k1600GT i would not have this issue.

SoCalRider Posted September 12, 2012 Posted September 12, 2012 I know this isn't cheap but I bought the BMR Products co-pilot shelf and I love it. When I bought my bike it had a GPS mounted down on top of the tank by the base of the handle bars and it was hard to look at because I had to take my eyes off the road for so long. Remember I do live in Orange county Ca so traffic can get crazy around here. If I was out in the country it would have been fine. The nice thing about having it right on top of the shelf is I have lots of info right there. My speed, The speed limit on that road, and also all GPS info. I am in the manufacturing world for a living and I have to say BMR Products makes an amazing product. I was extremely pleased with everything, Shipping , Packaging, instructions and fit and finish was great. And no I have nothing to do with the company just a very pleased customer. Oh and I also have a normal GPS that is about $150 I know its not water proof but it hasn't been a problem so far. The windshield blocks almost all water and it comes off real easy for when I park the bike. It is touch screen that works with gloves. Its a garmin but don't remember what model it is. Hope this helps! Here is a link. BMR Products Co-pilot dash

But im also working on making a crossbar kinda like http://www.motorcycleparts-hornig.com/BMW-R-1100-1150-RT/Alu-High-grade-Steel/GPS-Mounts.html i refuse to pay good money for something like this i paid 15$ for the hardware at home depot. I still have to round some corners and clean it up a bit yet. The bike started giving me issues, so me completing this bar is on hold for now. Here in a few days ill prob issue some pictures of what i got so far. if i can manage to get this bike back on the road.
