Greetings, I am currently riding a 05' Yamaha FJR 1300 throughout beautiful Northern Ontario Canada. Recently had the opportunity to try an R1200RT I now know what my next bike will be. There are several option packages that are available. I would enjoy hearing which ones would be worth spending the extra on and which may not.

Cheers,

Chris

I'd advise you to check at dealers first before you make a list of things you want or don't want the bike to come with. Usually, they come pretty loaded. Lots of times the choice is radio or no radio. (about $1K in difference), or ESA package or not.

BMW website says they start at $17,350 (USD) [LOL!] but dealers seem to have inventory of RTs with $23K MSRP!

When I puchased my 09, I got everything except the radio. I use my iPhone and Sena BT. Spending $1,400.00 on the radio was more than I wanted to spend.

The quick survey I did before buying mine in June found no base models showing up anywhere. Most were very loaded, some without ASC or TPM. As an example the maxbmw.com inventory probably still reflects what I was finding.

The most desirable bike to me would have no ESA (II) and no BMW sound system. Ohlins and some type of I-pod etc would suffice.

Well, fwiw, picked up a loaded '07RT almost six years ago... ESA, heated seats, radio/cd, cruise, etc. and etc. Would do it again. Enjoy listening to baseball games on the radio, riding year round the heated seat are niiiice. I ride a variety of roads, having all kinds of roads surfaces, at different "speed attitudes", seemingly on every ride, and use the ESA all the time on the fly.

Nice to hear that you can ride year round. We have four season's; fall, winter, spring, and construction....

Any comments on ASC or TPM.

There are a lot of people protesting road repairs in our area. Every time I get through a construction zone, someone has put up a sign that says "End Construction" to protest.

If that's the case, then they have a markup above MSRP added. MSRP on a fully loaded RT is $21.8k. If you buy from a dealer who will work with you, you should be able to get a loaded RT for $21,000 + T&L

As a construction worker I hate those signs....as a guy who likes to ride fast....I love those signs....so conflicted. ;)

You know, you are correct. I mis-remembered. Not technically, "MSRP". The loaded ones (with radio, etc) were $21K and change. One or two others had other farkles already added like large topcase and engine guards, etc. which brought the price to over $23K. I guess you could tell them to take those things off.

Any comments on ASC or TPM.

I just picked up '12 RT, personally ASC and TPM were must haves. TPM is spot on and nice to have a warning of possible flat tire before it's too late.

I had ASC retrofitted to my bike and would retrofit TPM if possible. The former is more important IMHO, as I can fairly easily keep track of my tire pressures.

Like tire pressure monitoring (thanks Explorer/Firestone), ASC is on its way to becoming manadatory fitment on cars, although of course it's a pretty different animal there. I ride lots in mountains and there's the combination of lots of curves with various who-knows-what on the road possible, not always easily visible. If all your roads are straight, the value declines, I'd think.

Chris,

Your profile doesn't indicate where you're from. The option packages in Canada are quite different to the USA.

You're right. It's hard to find one as a base package. When I finally made up my mind to buy the RT they had two 2012's on the floor. Identical except one had the audio package and one didn't. Both had ESA II but no ASC. I decided to get the one without the audio to same some money since I really didn't need it or want it. Well when I called the dealer and told them that I will be buying the RT the one without the audio package was already sold. Being ready to buy and not wait for the 2013 to come in I bought the one with the audio system. Now that I have it I actually enjoy it and spending the extra money doesn't seem so bad.
