TVdawg Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 Had to help pick up a stranded friend last night. His 02 RT started making a loud rattle (high pitch tin tapping sound) while he was headed down the highway. He pulled off and I picked him up with the trailer. The bike was running fine but the noise did not sound good. Our first thought was cam chain but not sure. Yes, before anyone asks, it's full of oil and has been regularly serviced. Ideas anyone?
dirtrider Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 Morning TVdawg No way to really know much without hearing the noise or way more information from your end. Hopefully as simple as something like an alternator belt coming apart. Might be clutch splines going out or cam chain/tensioner issues, or something more intense like bearing or piston issues. Get it home then start the engine & listen around for where the noise is coming from. If you can tell us where on the engine/trans the noise is coming from maybe we can advise on what is happening.
klkbmr Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 Noise seems to be coming from the top of the left side of the motor. quiet at idle and starts when you rise rpms a little above idle and continues to rattle bet goes away when it returns to idle. the start up noise on that side has been geten continually worse since i bought the bike about 5000 miles ago. bike has 47500 mi on it now. Noise does not seem to change at all if it is in gear, in nualtral, or with clutch pulled in or not. Thanks
dirtrider Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 Morning klkbmr OK that helps, your problem is: something that is on the top L/H side of the engine. So just replace what is there & making the noise? Other than cam chain rattle or valve noise we are still just guessing. That start up noise getting worse since you bought the bike is a bit bothersome. Might be a bad L/H cam chain tensioner piston but could also be a broken cam chain guide or severely stretched cam chain. OR, might be something else as we are just guessing at an engine noise over the internet based on an approximate location. You might try removing the L/H valve cover & seeing how loose the cam chain is. With the noise not being there at idle but coming on at higher RPM's could be cam chain flutter due to a poorly operating tensioner. Your noise might be serious so you really need to get an experienced BMW tec to listen to it if possible. With an unidentified engien noise there is always a risk of serious problems. If you want spend some money maybe TRY a new L/H updated chain tensioner just to see if that helps. You should understand that finding & diagnosing engine noises is difficult enough when standing over the engine & listening while playing with the throttle & is next to impossible from afar with very limited information.

I am going to replace the L/H chain tensioner and see if it quiets it down and then go from there. What is a good place to get one bmw shop or?
dirtrider Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 Morning klkbmr Either your BMW dealer or try http://rubberchickenracinggarage.com/chain.html Some dealers will give a slight discount but those are getting hard to find.

TVdawg Posted August 24, 2012 Author Posted August 24, 2012 Good news. He found out the alternator belt was failing and part had split off and was slapping around in there. He has not had the bike long and it just passed 47K, which is right at the service interval. WooHoo!
Boulder Dave Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 Check the simple stuff first! I've completely torn into things and then realized I overlooked the easy to spot problem. Doh!

WooHoo! yea what a pleasant surprise when I took the front cover off and saw those beautifull frayed pedals hanging off the alt. belt. 15 bucks from adv. auto.. I will still replace the tensoinor when it comes to get rid of the start up rattle. On the road again!!
