Stan Walker Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 This just continues an ongoing discussion of this topic. My '02 R1150RT bikes 'spline' history. At about 70,000 miles the tranny input splines were cleaned and lubed with Honda Moly 60. At that time there was almost no wear evident on the various parts and the bike was reassembled using all the original parts, the only thing new was the grease. Today as part of getting ready for an upcoming trip I pulled the starter, tied the clutch lever to the handle bars, and measured the amount of clutch disc rotation that could be done without causing the input shaft to rotate. As best I can tell it was about 5/32 of an inch measured at the outer edge of the clutch disc. Current mileage on the bike is 114,225 miles. Guess I got a good one. Stan
Twinsig Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 Last lube at 70k. I would suggest it's that time again. Your lube is probably GONE by now.
Jim Moore Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 Cool info. Thanks. It sure would be fun to pull the tranny off and see what 5/32s looks like on the splines. Doncha think?
AndyS Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 Cool .... It sure would be fun to pull the tranny off and see what 5/32s looks like on the splines. Doncha think? Mmmmmmm! Jim, you're a tease! Andy
David R Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 Mine was 5/8" and a couple hundred miles from striped. Stripped? Shopping for a new bike now.

Jovial Henry Posted August 25, 2012 Posted August 25, 2012 Mine was 5/8 or more?? Splines were so far gone I just couldn't bring myself to put it back in. Bought a good trans from a wreck. I now have almost none. Less than an 1/8.
Stan Walker Posted August 25, 2012 Author Posted August 25, 2012 I now have almost none. Less than an 1/8. Sounds good! Is this with a brand new clutch disc? I hope that solves your problem for good. Stan
Jovial Henry Posted August 25, 2012 Posted August 25, 2012 Oh, yes new disk. I bought the disk with the intentions of putting it in with old trans which I would have done if I was going to keep bike. I intend to sell or trade and do not want to sell something with problems. I doubt it would have lasted 10K.
