GeorgeK Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 Just heard that o-rings that keep fluid from the clutch fail at about 80K miles on an RT. Anybody heard of this? Have 76K miles on an '08 RT now. Thanks, George
dirtrider Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 Afternoon George Yep at 80,001 miles the clutch slave will fail & ruin your clutch. NOT! Realistically the clutch slave seal can fail at about any time regardless of miles. The good news is that on the 1200RT the slave to trans doesn't use a gasket so you can usually see some seepage at the slave to trans mate up if it starts seeping. BMW did have some issues with the early 1200RT slave cylinders as they have had an updated cylinder available for a while now. If it worries you just get the new version & replace yours. Kind of a pain to bleed but if done from the bottom up not a big deal.
4wheeldog Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 The clutch slave cylinders on the oil heads tend to fail at some point. Keeping fresh fluid in the system is the best preventative, though I wound up replacing mine around 70k. You can keep an eye on the reservoir level, and the first sign of failure was the clutch releasing itself without my releasing the lever......Long before it lost enough to have an effect on the clutch itself.
dirtrider Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 Afternoon 4wheeldog Unfortunately on Georges 2008 1200RT there is no window in the clutch reservoir so keeping an eye on the fluid level is difficult at best. Removing the cover is a pain as that makes a mess & fluid ends up in the screw holes that needs to be remove or it will continually seep out as the cover heats & cools in the sun.

There's a small circular plastic window on the inside (ignition key-facing) surface. Turn the front wheel to full right lock, then eye-ball the level.

You have a picture of this window on a 2008 1200RT? I have a 2008 1200RT in my shop right now & no such window on the clutch reservoir. You sure you aren't thinking of the brake reservoir?
