aceaceca Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 If I were going to replace the clutch plate in my bike, this is the disc I would choose. My 04 RTP had a clutch at 23k miles and I have only about 33k miles now so am riding the storm. My opinion is that the trans and clutch splines fail on these bikes due to a lack of a sprung hub clutch to absorb the pounding. There is no give in the system anywhere. Just my two cents worth and an option to choose. http://www.rbracing-rsr.com/bmw_clutches.html

Add a spring center disk to that & your launch will be like rubber band drive. If you want to stop that trans input spline wear either replace all the clutch parts & the front trans housing (to correct the input shaft to crankshaft mis alignment issue) or use an indicator & offset trans alignment dowels to perfectly center the trans input shaft on the crankshaft center. I have yet to see a repeat spline wear issue on one that has been properly aligned.
Boffin Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 In addition to what DR says, several people have tried to buy one of those clutches - nobody has yet managed to get one delivered. Andy
flars Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 "...and I have only about 33k miles now so am riding the storm..." RTP that have been used in service get about 20K. Generally, all non-police-abused R bikes get over 80K. I replaced my clutch at 135k because I was in there anyway, but it was no where near the wear limit.
philbytx Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 Save your dosh mate! "Regular" RT Riders get waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyy over that mileage, I wouldn't be at all concerned at 33k !!
4wheeldog Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 My RT has over 75k, and the clutch is apparently in new condition. Of course, my 4runner has 235k on the original clutch, with no problems. How you use a clutch will define its longevity.
aceaceca Posted August 23, 2012 Author Posted August 23, 2012 Thanks dirtrider, I would never have guessed. Pretty clever fellows. I am amazed at all the technology in these bikes. I am only used to 70's Brit iron, Norton and Triumph. This bike is a whole new ball game for me. I love it though.
Caerleon Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 Just make sure the clutch is adjusted correctly on my RTP the Police had it wound in too tight. It's no wonder why they go thru clutches like no one else.

My experience has been that RTP duty bikes get about 60k miles before needing clutch replacement. Sometimes less, sometimes more. Never heard of a RTP that only got 20k out of the clutch that wasn't abused.

My R90s and R75/5 only have the same tranny type cush and are more than adequate in terms of minimal driveline "drivability" issues. Germans can engineer. RPG
