Bill_Walker Posted August 20, 2012 Posted August 20, 2012 Home about quarter after 8. I spoke to David. He got home about 6. It was a fun ride, despite some difficulties keeping the group together.
David13 Posted August 20, 2012 Posted August 20, 2012 I got back at 6. I could not imagine you got behind me. The best part was the view out to the east, as the road comes out Nine Mile canyon. I talked to Larry. He got in a 6:30. With complaints about the Grapevine. I did a little lane splitting there, that's all. And I enjoyed Caliente Bodfish, and Caliente Creek road. The 223 out to Arvin. That is a scenic and fast descent. Anyway, it was a joy to see everyone out there, Cornelius, Don, Joe, Carl, Bill, and Larry. And to socialize a bit with the colorful crew at McNally's, high handlebars and all. dc
LBump Posted August 20, 2012 Posted August 20, 2012 Greetings All. Got in at 6:34 after a 400 mile day. What a day! It was good to see everyone! Enjoyed the company and the Book on Tape. Another meat fest under the belt. See ya on the next go around without the heat... maybe. We'll meet half way up the mountain at the 'General Store'...
mrduck Posted August 20, 2012 Posted August 20, 2012 And a fine ride it was....even though I bailed out on the steak dinner and headed home. But the ride home was rather entertaining, I'd forgotton how nice 178 is along the river heading towards Bakersfield. Went over to Bena rd, a favorite two lane twisty that heads back to Tehachapi, only to blow by a "road closed ahead" sign...Huh? Naw, can't be.....got on down the road a ways and yup, the bridge is being rebuilt. Ah, but there's the dirt equiptment road going down the bank and across the wash then back up the other side....OK, no problem...only to find another bridge out a little further up the road, same deal, this one kinda silty but passable.Made it home around 7pm that evening, and while reveling the spousal member with tales of the days ride, when I got to the offroad part was severly verbaly repremanded with "ARE YOU NUCKING FUTZ? DOING THAT $HIT OUT THERE BY YOURSELF??!!....well it seemed OK at the time.... And now I do seem to remember some one on Saturday morning asking if our back road ride to Tehachapi was all paved....laughter all around...then someone else remarking "that's a legitimate question with you two"!!! That area up there around Kernville and the Sequoias is a favorite of ours, any time anyone wants to head up there again, lemme know... Thanks guys, that was great Don J
Bill_Walker Posted August 20, 2012 Author Posted August 20, 2012 Thanks again, Don and Cornelius, for leading us on that little Tehachapi detour. Much more fun than staying on the slab! After losing David at Sherman Pass due to somebody (ahem, Joe ) leading most of us right past the turn, we went over what seemed like, but apparently wasn't (per David), most of Sherman Pass Road hoping to find David, with no luck. Since Joe had to turn around to get back home anyway, and we didn't know about the location of the general store, we turned back and had lunch at McNally's burger shack. We then headed west via 190 to Springville. Wow, what a bunch of twisties on the western 25 miles of that ride! What a workout! Big fun. After that, it was all slab. I took Carl and Larry's suggestion to take 210-57-5, rather than stay on 5 or take 405. Once over the grapevine, traffic was a breeze on the whole route, although it does add about 16 miles (seems like more, but Google says 16). Thanks, guys!
mbelectric Posted August 20, 2012 Posted August 20, 2012 Did anyone besides David make it out to 395 on 9 mile rd? MB.
CoarsegoldKid Posted August 20, 2012 Posted August 20, 2012 David was the only one, Mark. It was never my intention to go down to 395. The rest of us decided to go return over the summit and head for home from the western slope. At lunch it was decided to take CA190 above Johnsondale down into Springdale and through Porterville over to CA99. I split north and the rest rode south. I didn't have my GPS programmed to go onto the Sherman Pass road. David was last leaving the motel parking lot but within sight. When I missed the turn-off for the pass no one came up to let me know so we continued on for 5 miles of twisty road until we came to another intersection. It was there I was informed of the error. We backtracked the 5 miles. Then we hung out at the view point summit for at least 30 minutes. I would like to thank David for inspiring us to do this ride. To bad we rarely saw him. Also just as pleasant to have David at our table for dinner. See ya all in Death Valley come November. Maybe we won't get snow until December and can do the pass again in 2012.
Bill_Walker Posted August 20, 2012 Author Posted August 20, 2012 Here's where I think we (except for David on Sunday) went, skipping the Angeles Crest/Angeles Forest part: Best guess at Don/Cornelius route from the Lancaster Avenue I Starbucks to The Apple Shed: linky Route from The Apple Shed to Corral Creek Resort: linky Sunday route from Corral Creek, past Johnsondale, over part of Sherman Pass and back to McNally's: linky Sunday route from McNally's to Springville: linky. We just took a straight shot out 190 to 99 from there.
David13 Posted August 20, 2012 Posted August 20, 2012 On Saturday I was behind everyone and made a wrong turn. No gps, no map, and no real idea where I was going, tho' I been there before. And came to the south end of Bena road where it was blocked and said "road closed". So I went another way. On Sherman Pass, there are two summits, one east and one west, with a huge valley between, known as Kennedy Meadow. Most scenic. Blackrock Station, where the others turned around is less than half way thru'. Another 13 miles to the store, then about 10 more to the eastern overlook, which is by far the most scenic and dramatic. And 24 miles from the store to 395. I like to ride at my own speed, so I have no problem riding alone, and we all ended up in the same place anyway. I was glad to see all of you out there. dc
Groanup Posted August 20, 2012 Posted August 20, 2012 Sounds like you gents had fun! Thanks for the links Bill. Might come in handy.
mbelectric Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 Good report guys, very entertaining to say the least... Can you imagine the first travellers through that area? Prob guess a week wouldn't be enough time to get from Owens Valley to Bakes... Joe, Nov sounds like a plan. Overnight at McNallys, over Sherman, and on to Beatty. I may have just jinxed it. Snow for sure now. MB.
longjohn Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 Hmm, a ride report with no pics. Did it really happen? I kid, I kid. I'll be riding up 1 to PG sep 7-9 to see my brothers. I already have one tagging along and we'll be taking the long way pch>23>126>150>33>58>... Lovers Point Inn is 3 min away by car/mc. Long day of riding on Fri, short day or riding on Sat and zoom home on Sun. I'm going to try and get on 17 mile drive. I'll post in ride planning shortly. Anyone else got the itch?
mbelectric Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 John, start another thread for your ride plans, I can make lunch somewhere, like maybe Phil's in Moss Landing??? I've heard rumors 17 mile is off limits to motorbikes, rumor has it the HD crowd caused it.. I too want to see pic's, especially this Don Cornelius character.. MB.
Bill_Walker Posted August 21, 2012 Author Posted August 21, 2012 I've heard rumors 17 mile is off limits to motorbikes, rumor has it the HD crowd caused it.. That was true the last time I was there, 5-6 years ago. I too want to see pic's, especially this Don Cornelius character.. MB. I've just reviewed my photos, and according to them, there is no Don Cornelius. Or Don. Or Cornelius. OK, I only took a few photos, and I haven't put them up anywhere yet.
CoarsegoldKid Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 Known to stop at foo foo coffee shops. He doesn't exist on film or digital bits. He appears only as a moving object on the horizon. You must see him to believe him.
longjohn Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 I've heard rumors 17 mile is off limits to motorbikes, rumor has it the HD crowd caused it.. yes you can't pay to get in on mc, but if you know someone who lives there...
Bill_Walker Posted August 21, 2012 Author Posted August 21, 2012 Here are the only photos I took that are worth a damn: Here's the "small" (16 oz.) ribeye steak at McNally's: Here are the Lithuanian twins after a McNally's dinner:
