How does one service the headlight area parking bulb? does it just pull down? I think its impossible on an '04!

The rubber lamp holder just has to be wiggled and pulled down.

The holder has a circumfrential groove around its body that acts like a grommet, so it does need a bit of work to get it out.

You could try a tiny amount of hellerine oil to help lubricate the rubber (or even a TINY spray of silicone spray) and it will slide down.

Tried a bit of silcone, but it seems not to want to budge. it has a bulge around the bulb and hard plastic ring at base underneath preventing a good grasp . Now that I know that is the proceedure, I'll keep at it .Thanks.

Why can't it just can't be left off?

Factoid: Uses very roughly 1/30 HP and corresponding gas.

Wow, I really tend with you on this one. In the UK, when we used to have the option to use our common sense and choose when to have our dipped (low beam) headlight on, then the little 'marker' or side light used to kind of have a use when you park on a road, (under certain circumstances it is a legal requirement to display a light).

However, I don't think I have ever had mine switched on for that purpose.

Nowadays, the low beam is wired 'on' all the time, so the little bulb seems to do nothing.

Mind you, I'd still leave the holder in place, as it prevents water from getting into the headlight housing.

The marker light is always on Andy - and it is an MoT test fail (UK annual safety test) if it is not working.

I agree however, that the lamp has no function unless you do use it as a parking marker light - which will kill the battery overnight :dopeslap:

Yes, I know that. What I meant was, I never switch it on for the purpose of a 'parking light', for exactly the reason you state.

So I think we're agreed the lamp has no purpose except to accelerate global warming!

Hey, it's your "backup" if the main H4 or H7 fails.

Good point, if you feel adequately conspicuous with a tiny bulb glowing. But also easy to carry or buy nearby a new main bulb.

Would anyone know, if the incandescent bulb were replaced with a

LED, would it pass MOT ?

To help avoid that possibility, I replaced mine with a lower-wattage bulb. But if it burns out -- I'm just going to let it be.

Yes.

Haha! If you were riding at night and your headlight failed, that buld would not help you one jot.

Yeah, I was mostly joking, but there is one jot: others could still see you ... wondering where you're going.
