Mark Mayo Posted August 17, 2012 Posted August 17, 2012 My right mirror on my 2004 R1150RT has come loose twice during rides (thanks Bill Allen for encouraging me to use cables to prevent loss/damage). Do those female springs come out with that screw and does BMW sell them? Have you replaced these? Easy?
David R Posted August 17, 2012 Posted August 17, 2012 I Have bent them many times. Finally I used a little black silicone. I took them off a few times and they still don't rattle. Needle nose pliers are your friend. David
Michaelr11 Posted August 17, 2012 Posted August 17, 2012 I believe you're refering to the base plates: 08 46 63 2 352 121 BASE PLATE LEFT 1 $53.42 08 46 63 2 352 122 BASE PLATE RIGHT 1 $53.42 Available from BMW.
eddd Posted August 17, 2012 Posted August 17, 2012 I replaced the base plates on mine at about 150,000 miles. I'd always been very careful putting the mirror back on, but eventually it got to the point that they were starting to get a bit loose. Pretty easy job and well worth it.
Mark Mayo Posted August 17, 2012 Author Posted August 17, 2012 Thanks to you I bought the replacement plates with spring sockets for $102 and will replace. Not cool when coming out of a tough twisty only to see your mirror starting to slip off. THANKS
Mark Mayo Posted August 18, 2012 Author Posted August 18, 2012 Ok now that I have the new plates... The old plate comes out with three screws easily, but getting the mirror portion removed from the plate is not obvious. I tightened the spring tabs on the old ones and reinstalled the mirrors for tomorrow's ride. Any hints how to safely remove the mirror???????? Thanks
eddd Posted August 19, 2012 Posted August 19, 2012 I was hoping someone who has done this more recently or at least has a better memory would respond. I do not recall having any issues with the mirror. Can you post a picture to jar my memory?
kioolt Posted August 19, 2012 Posted August 19, 2012 I am not sure if this link will help you or not since it refers to the old K bikes. I have used this procedure on my K100LT and it worked perfectly. http://www.ibmwr.org/ktech/krs-mirror-removal.shtml
Mark Mayo Posted August 19, 2012 Author Posted August 19, 2012 Below is the new part. Note that there are three "sockets" that I guess receive some kind of pins from the mirror when it seats. It seemed solidly mated on the original so I opted to re-install the old ones and wait for more info. A ride today was part of that too. If you look at the middle there is a hole that, in the original has a vertical line deep inside that is part of the mirror assembly I need to move to the new part. New part and springs look so nice I am anxious to install. Mirrors that are loose on a twisty, even when dangling with a safety wire, are not my favorite problem. Any ideas?, anyone? Bueler? (sorry I had to do it)
eddd Posted August 19, 2012 Posted August 19, 2012 I took one of mine off to get a good look at it. Attached to the back of the mirror are pairs of little clips on each side of the pins that located the mirror to the pivot adjuster. I believe there are eight of these clips. Using a small screwdriver or similar tool, slide the clips off of the pivot adjuster. You might need to move only the four you can easily see, but the ones further down can be dislodged with a long reach tool. The mirror will come loose allowing you to move and transfer the pivot to the new plates.
Mark Mayo Posted August 20, 2012 Author Posted August 20, 2012 I will carefully try this. I played with those clips a bit, but was gunshy of breaking any. Thanks again
eddd Posted August 20, 2012 Posted August 20, 2012 I have one that is broken, so it obviously can happen, but with two at each corner you should be OK even with a couple of broken clips.
