mickeymc Posted August 16, 2012 Posted August 16, 2012 I am about to replace the battery in my 1200rt. When I changed battery on my 1150 I was told to turn on the switch and open the throttle wide open three times then turn the switch off before riding. Is there a procedure like this foe the 1200?
w2ge Posted August 16, 2012 Posted August 16, 2012 I've heard similar for the RT. "two times, slowly open and close the throttle to allow the stepper motors to "re-sync" Believe that is the process
dirtrider Posted August 16, 2012 Posted August 16, 2012 Morning mickeymc You really should but if you don't it will re-learn in time. On the 1200 hexhead you technically only need to key on (do not start) then FULLY open & close the throttle once but doing it twice assures you get it fully opened & closed. This is to re-teach the TPS (throttle position sensor) & has nothing to do with the stepper motors as those re-set at each new key on automatically.
w2ge Posted August 16, 2012 Posted August 16, 2012 I knew DR would step-in. Yeah, that's it.. the TPS's, that's what I meant to say. (That's my story and I'm sticking with it!) ;-)
Guest Kakugo Posted August 16, 2012 Posted August 16, 2012 Just a quick (related) question: is it normal for the service light to come up each and every time after reconnecting the battery even after doing the TPS relearn? Is it a subtle way to force people to go to the dealer for something as simple as a battery swap? Thanks
Nice n Easy Rider Posted August 16, 2012 Posted August 16, 2012 Mine never came up after I changed mine out.
dirtrider Posted August 16, 2012 Posted August 16, 2012 Afternoon Kakugo Are your referring to the "service due indicator" or the yellow triangle, or ???? What bike are you working on? & what year bike? Only the later 1200RT's have the "service due indicator". No light just the word service showing in the lower left. If you are referring to a late 1200RT then disconnecting the battery for more than a very short time can in some instances cause the service due indicator to come on. If the computer loses it's power for a long time it loses it's date data so that can bring the service due indicator on due to that service once a year thing. The computer retains the mileage untill next service even with battery disconnect so that shouldn't change but the date part can.
mickeymc Posted August 16, 2012 Author Posted August 16, 2012 Ok,Thanks Everyone!!!!!!!!!!! Now hopefully the post lady will stop by today.

Noticed this for the first time when I was connecting the Optimate plug and the second time when I was changing the battery last year. Both times the bike was off the battery for five minutes at most, both time i did the TPS relearn and both times the service remainder came on. First time it was cleared by dealer at no cost, second time it just stayed there because I had a service booked in two weeks.
dirtrider Posted August 16, 2012 Posted August 16, 2012 Afternoon Kakugo OK, I also have a 2009 RT. I used the GS-911 to set my service interval way out in the future (something like 2014). Something the dealer computer can't do. The GS-911 can't turn it off but can set it a long time into the future. I had my battery removed for the entire winter & the service reminder never came on when re-connected in the spring. If you can get someone with a GS-911 to reset your date & mileage interval way into the future you shouldn't have that service reminder come on for many years.

I have been thinking about getting as GS911 (since nobody has one around here) but since the BMW gets serviced at the dealer I have been putting the expense off until now. Once the Honda gets new suspensions, I'll budget it.
