cpayne Posted August 15, 2012 Posted August 15, 2012 May have an opportunity to buy a high mileage (125K) 04 , 05 or 06 RT-P . Given these bikes are being turned in for high mileage, I would assume they were taken care of. What are the difference between them. I'm a noob to these bikes. I have a few upgrades for an 04 one of which is the rubber chicken garage bushings I bought for an 04. Would it work on an 05,06? Thanks for the input.
aceaceca Posted August 15, 2012 Posted August 15, 2012 I just got a low mileage 32k 2004 RTP. I test drove a high miler but waited and searched for over a year. I believe they are all essentially the same bike. If you are not in a rush I would wait and find a lower mileage specimen. They are out there.
George S. Posted August 15, 2012 Posted August 15, 2012 Since I won a new bike in the Superstakes, in a week or so I'm putting my low mileage (just turned 40K) 2004 RT-P up for sale. I have ALL service records from it's PD service up until today, and there are no issues or surprises in the records. I too looked for a low mileage one for a long time. There's plenty of high mileage ones out there, but most times you can't get the service records and I felt it would be too much of a gamble. PM me if interested.
lkchris Posted August 16, 2012 Posted August 16, 2012 Well, the 2004 is an R1150 and the later ones are R1200s, i.e. whole new motorcycles in comparison.
Boffin Posted August 16, 2012 Posted August 16, 2012 Well, the 2004 is an R1150 and the later ones are R1200s, i.e. whole new motorcycles in comparison. Not necessarily for the RTP - BMW continued to supply "Authority" versions of the 1150 into 2006. Andy
Quinn Posted August 16, 2012 Posted August 16, 2012 Good to see you getting back in the saddle after your accident. Hope you're fully healed up and ready to go. If not, ask your brother to keep an eye out for RT-Ps at Capitol BMW in Raleigh; they do a lot of service and sales for North Carolina there and get trade-ins periodically. -----

If the '06 is an 1150 with lower miles, I'd definitely take it over a 125K '04. A well-maintained high mileage 1150 will run well, but there is inevitable wear associated with the high miles -- the main reason I came down to look at your bike for parts for my 95K '04 RT-P. I'd take a good low-miles RT-P to maximize the amount of ride time/minimize the wrenching time. That would include taking a pass on these if they are all up in the 125K range, and holding out for a clean lower-miles bike. On the FD pivot bushings, yes, they would fit in any 1150RT swingarm -- they are all the same. As to differences, AFAIK, all of the 1150RT-P's are fundamentally the same mechanically, with only department-by-department configuration variations. An '06 1150RT-P should be virtually identical to the '04. Best, Mark ps -- still haven't taken my RT-P apart yet, so I'm still interested once your attorneys "release" the corpse.
cpayne Posted August 16, 2012 Author Posted August 16, 2012 Thanks for the kind words. Still not sure about getting into the saddle. I still have some work to do and my right foot may never be 100 percent. I can get on the computer and putter around the house for a bit right now but I'm working on it. Wanted to get one at auction and do the work when I'm able. Hopefully by then I'll get my nerve back. Good to see you getting back in the saddle after your accident.
