Ah, the Wonder of Driverless Cars

There seems to be a lot of reporting lately regarding soon-to-be produced driverless cars.

Along those lines, I get a chuckle every time I watch Volvo's demonstration of its fully automated braking system,

Honestly, I am not optimistic . . . even acknowledging that most drivers are barely connected to the task at hand.

Not a complete failure. They neglected to note that the windshield wipers came on automatically following impact. This could be useful in identifying what you've hit.

We already have driverless cars. Not hard to spot them.

That was a good one, Bob!

Mike, Volvo's failures aside, Google seems to have better success with its driverless cars. I don't know of any accidents or problems so far, and I believe they've logged over 300,000 miles so far. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_driverless_car

There was a five-car crash involving one of them, but Google claimed it was being manually controlled at the time.

I just thought the Volvo thing was hilarious, recognizing, of course, that they've long been in a leader in implementing safety advancements.

Yes, I heard about the crash, but since it was manually controlled I didn't count it as "driverless" fault.

I don't think anyone has built a better driverless car than audi

Nah. Piloting a car up a pre-planned route on a known two-lane road with no other traffic, no signals, no stop signs, no intersections and no pedestrians is child's play, computer-wise, compared to driving around in a city, which is what Google has done.

The description on the Volvo video notes that human error was responsible: they forgot to turn the automatic braking system on!

Let's hope they don't come up with driverless motorcycles.

Seems to me that, if you have to turn it on, it's not automatic....

Not much different than ABS on a GS, which can be turned on or off.

Unknown from the test is why the system was off in the first place.
