redryder Posted August 12, 2012 Posted August 12, 2012 My nephew was riding his 96 1100RT the other day and made a quick stop beside the road after getting something in his eye. He said he was predominately fixated on getting safely off the road and getting the debris out of his eye. As he got ready to drive off again, he said his bike wouldn't move and the RID displayed "E". He thought it was in neutral but it wasn't. He shifted back into 1st and was able to drive off without incident. For troubleshooting purposes, he went back into 5th gear and did several hard acceleration runs and the clutch never slipped. I know some of the 1150s had an "E" display for 6th gear, but I've never heard of that on an 1100. Thanks for the input.
smiller Posted August 12, 2012 Posted August 12, 2012 The RID uses a 4-wire BCD-coded connection from the gear selection switch on the transmission. One or more of these lines are grounded in various combinations to cause the RID to display an appropriate gear number. There is no combination that will normally cause the RID to display 'E' on the 1100, but if the right contacts in the switch are dirty then the RID can be erroneously signalled to do so. If the switch is going flakey (not uncommon) it can be unpredictable, he might see the E (or some other incorrect display) in the future, or not.
SKYGZR Posted August 12, 2012 Posted August 12, 2012 getting something in his eye. getting the debris out of his eye. the RID displayed "E". "E" = EYE Protection
Danny caddyshack Noonan Posted August 12, 2012 Posted August 12, 2012 Probably no sweat. If I don't positively kick mine into neutral, it'll show E. Just kick it down.
David R Posted August 12, 2012 Posted August 12, 2012 If its not exactly in a gear I can get an E on my 1100. I blame it on the operator. (me). SO E means not Exactly in a gear. I like the Eye protection one better. David
Don Beissel Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 I get E sometimes too. Usually letting out the clutch just a bit, or shifting fixes it.
dirtrider Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 Afternoon redryder Both the BMW 1100RT & the early 1150RT use the same dash riders information display (RID) unit. So as Seth mentioned above IF the switching inside the trans switch ends up just so it can signal an "E" as the early 1150RT's used that "E" for 6th gear indication.
