Polda Posted August 10, 2012 Posted August 10, 2012 I have 96 1100RT and wondering whether I can start engine with the side stand and 1st gear with clutch. Whenever engine stalls, I have to put it in neutral and stand the bike. Thanks for the tip.
dirtrider Posted August 10, 2012 Posted August 10, 2012 Evening Polda Your request doesn't make a lot of sense. Can you say what you want to do in another way?
Quinn Posted August 11, 2012 Posted August 11, 2012 On mine, an '04RT, I just have to have the side stand up and it cranks in first gear with the clutch pulled in. It I lower the side stand, the RID (rider indicator display) is blank and it won't crank in gear. If I shift it into neutral, the display comes on and it cranks with the clutch either in or out. Side stand down-------- neutral only-------- cranks Side stand up-------- pull in clutch------- cranks Hope that helps -----
dirtrider Posted August 11, 2012 Posted August 11, 2012 Evening Quinn Your 1150RT has a different side stand safety switch system than Polda's 1100RT. On the R1100RT they will not even run with the sidestand down even if in neutral.
scottnew Posted August 11, 2012 Posted August 11, 2012 I cannot start my 2000 r11rt with the sidestand down at all. Clutch in or anything it does nothing until the sidestand is up.. In fact, if the bike is running, in neutral, clutch pulled in, and I put the side stand down the bike dies instantly.. I have not the first clue if this is normal, but it doesn't really bother me.. My VStrom on the other hand hasn't a care in the world how its started so long as the clutch is pulled in.. Personally its fine with me either way as long as it starts and I know how to do so ")
Michaelr11 Posted August 11, 2012 Posted August 11, 2012 That is the normal behavior for the R1100RT. There are procedures floating around to modify the side stand wiring so the bike will start and idle if the bike is in neutral with the stand down. I believe this is an authority mod. Personally, I like it the original way; when I'm riding I never put the bike in neutral. If I stop for gas, food or a break I'm in 1st gear and I push the side stand down which kills the engine. When I'm ready to pull away, I push up the stand, pull in the clutch lever and start the bike. If the clutch safety switch fails, I would have to engage neutral. When I get home, I put it in N and pull it up onto the centerstand.
scottnew Posted August 11, 2012 Posted August 11, 2012 I agree, I too like it fine the way it is. It takes a little getting used to but serves its own purpose and doesn't bother me in the least. Its nice to know that my bike is normal though and without some starnge sidestand issue.
Larsen Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 Back in 2000 or 2001 I researched the PD Modification and came up with the parts required and the actual modification. The procedure was written up by David Smith back in 2001 giving me credit for finding the part numbers and originally describing this modification See: Start Your R1100RT With The Sidestand Down http://www.ibmwr.org/r-tech/oilheads/run_on_sidestand/sidestand_start.shtml I haven't been staying current with BMWSportTouring for quite a few years but I was at the first meeting of the original group that met at Cary Littell's house when this group was formed back when I lived in the SF Bay Area. I've had a few RTs over the years and last rode my favorite, a very low mileage 2000 R1100RT yesterday. I live up at 8,000' in the Rockies now and the snow gets up over 6' meaning that riding is not a winter activity any more. The above modification is easy to do and I've never ever had a problem because of it! Take care, Jim Larsen
scottnew Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 That's probably as easy as it gets right there If I'm ever to the point where I decide to make the switch over I'll be thanking you for the easy to follow write up with attached part numbers
Larsen Posted August 14, 2012 Posted August 14, 2012 Where this mod comes in handy is when you have a low battery that might not restart and you drop a glove or something and want to momentarily dismount to retrieve it. You control the bike instead of the bike controlling you! Jim
SKYGZR Posted August 14, 2012 Posted August 14, 2012 Just clip the wires down at the switch, wire them together, tape/shrink tube splice, done..machine will now run with stand down.
Boxerdad Posted August 15, 2012 Posted August 15, 2012 Just clip the wires down at the switch, wire them together, tape/shrink tube splice, done..machine will now run with stand down. This was the first thing I did to my 1100RT. For the past 70K she has thought the side stand was up. No issues. Cheap quick fix.
Polda Posted August 22, 2012 Author Posted August 22, 2012 I posted my question and left for vacation. Just got back and glad to see the response. Thanks for the link, Jim. When engine stalls while driving, it makes me so nervous what to do to restart. With this mod, I can at least start with just the clutch lever not worrying about find the neutral. Paul

Paul Hi Paul, You might find it handy to print out the R1100RT Starter Circuit attachment below and keep it in the glovebox. It shows how to jumper the Starter Relay socket to start and run the bike in the event of Kill/Sidestand switch or Starter Relay failure.

I just printed it, and it's going in the pocket of my tank bag. jp
