wz31857 Posted August 10, 2012 Posted August 10, 2012 What can I do to check out a used transmission.I am a little nervous about the clatter coming from my transmission and just so happens I located a kid with a 04 rtp engine and drivetrain with 20000 miles on it.He wants help seperating the parts. My thinking is drain the oil and inspect it and try to some how spin it over and change the gears although the shifter of course is not on the transmission.Any ideas. I am trying to find someone more familiar than me with only 6 months of bmw ownership expierience to listen to my rattle and concerns but in the San Fernando valley area you have a shop full of grumps and ventura you have snobs who don't care..I just want to bend an ear so to speak.
azccj Posted August 10, 2012 Posted August 10, 2012 RTP trans are geared diffent from civillian RTs I think.
philbytx Posted August 10, 2012 Posted August 10, 2012 Clattering? Well they all KINDA do that LOL! Does the clattering stop when you pull the clutch lever in?
David R Posted August 10, 2012 Posted August 10, 2012 Does your transmission jump out of gear? Like said above, clattering with clutch out is normal, if it goes away with clutch in and idling, its OK. David
dirtrider Posted August 10, 2012 Posted August 10, 2012 Afternoon wz31857 As mentioned above that 2004 RT-P probably has different trans gear ratios. (might not be a bad thing but probably different none the less). I'm not sure ALL 2004 RT-P's did but a lot of the 2004 RT-P's used the gearbox from a GS-Adventure (basically a close ratio gear box). If you want the same trans as you have now be sure to verify the trans numbers on your gear box as well as the RT-P you are looking at. On looking at a new (used) trans-- -Obviously look CLOSELY at the input shaft splines (real closely) as those are known to wear on the 1150 transmissions. -Look at the removed gear oil (strain it through a coffee filter or paper towel). -There is a 2nd drain plug on the bottom of the case. Remove that & look (it should have a magnet on it) for any sharp metal or other unusual debris. -Look for signs of past seal leakage front & rear.
wz31857 Posted August 11, 2012 Author Posted August 11, 2012 Yes it does go away when you pull in the clutch. After studying the transmission in the manual it seemed to me that the spring cluster is the source,I ride with another 04 rt and it is definitely louder than most.I put in dino oil with the guard dog and it shifts like butter,I have missed 2nd gear a few times but it seems when I'm not concentrating on missing a gear theres never a problem. I appreciate all of your input I would just feel better with an expierienced ear having a listen.
azccj Posted August 11, 2012 Posted August 11, 2012 The clacking you hear might be a worn clutch hub and transmission input splines. Mine made the sound until I changed out the clutch disk, which made the clack go away, for now.
