SWB Posted August 8, 2012 Posted August 8, 2012 My (U.S. Marine/student) son-in-law is trying to ride his Harley from his hometown in Florida back to new home in California. He's apparently broken down somewhere near Baton Rouge. He was heading towards a U-haul center to check into renting a uhaul to complete the trip and broke down. Don't know his status at the moment (no contact). If someone's in that area with a pickup or trailer who might be able to help, please send me a message and I'll call back. Also, if anyone has an idea that might be more cost effective, would appreciate ideas. Shipping the bike plus his air fare will not save him much if anything. Apparently, rental companies don't rent pick-up trucks other than local use only. Thanks, Scott
Paul Mihalka Posted August 8, 2012 Posted August 8, 2012 A few years back I had to Uhaul my bike and myself from Arkansas to Maryland, about 1.000 miles. The total cost between Uhaul, gas, hotel was about $1.500. What kills Uhaul is mileage and gas. Shipping the bike is around $500.
SWB Posted August 8, 2012 Author Posted August 8, 2012 Thanks Paul. Going to see if we can get him a pickup truck rental from a local airport. He's out of contact (cell phone may be dead). He's so independent that he'll probably be motoring down the road with a $2000 U-Haul before I hear from him again. lol. Scott
upflying Posted August 8, 2012 Posted August 8, 2012 Any sources in the BMWMOA Anonymous book? How close is he to Barksdale AFB? Military will always come and rescue someone in uniform. If Ca is his new PCS, the military should pick up the tab on moving expenses.
Whip Posted August 8, 2012 Posted August 8, 2012 If we can get him to San Antonio I will help him get it fixed and do whatever I have to get him and his bike to CA. I have a Harley guy that is very very good. I would even bring my trailer to Houston to get him. shoot me a PM or call 210-394-3221 Larry
SWB Posted August 9, 2012 Author Posted August 9, 2012 Bob, Larry - thx guys, and Larry for offering. He's in a U-Haul heading to Texas with the bike (i.e. natural Harley guy ;-)). My daughter is flying out to meet him. Just had their first anniversary - everything is an urgent emergency when you're in love - lol. I was concerned about the late hour, which is why I "rang the bell". Looks like it'll all work out. Thanks again, Scott
Kathy R Posted August 9, 2012 Posted August 9, 2012 I just love you people, all of you, for being there for someone else. I hope he turned the reserve fuel petcock......
SWB Posted August 9, 2012 Author Posted August 9, 2012 Lol@"reserve fuel petcock" I think it's major top end damage; he has mechanical experience and probably knew this was not going to be a quick fix. re: being there for each other - I knew for a fact if he got close enough to Texas, Whip would respond. And if not Whip, a half dozen others. I haven't been much off my commute route on my BMW in five years of riding (yeah, it's a crying shame, I know), but when I finally have the time to go coast to coast, I know I'll have a BMWST.com friend 200 miles from anywhere I am willing to help out. (Well, that's true if I don't wait too long to start touring, cause evidently, a few of us here are getting on in years.)
ully211 Posted August 9, 2012 Posted August 9, 2012 Would really like to 2nd Kathy's post ... the generousity and support of the folks on this website are nothing short of incredible.

Sorry it's major, but I had to wink wink that simple remedy in there. We can only hope it's the simple stuff, like fuses and kill switches. (Well, that's true if I don't wait too long to start touring, cause evidently, a few of us here are getting on in years.) Who you calling old! If you are going to break down, I can think of many mechanical oasis like the Whip's, placed here and there around the world. It's heartwarming to read of the efforts made by those willing to put their own life on hold in order to help another person out of a jam. I know I've been a beneficiary (Paul was there for Laney and I many years ago when her tranny went kaput). (Ed noticed my chain was slack and jumped right in to help make it right) (and the list goes on). People are mostly amazingly good.
