scottnew Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 I seem to remember reading a while back about working some grease/lube in somewhere while having the starter off.. Am I crazy or does this ring a bell? If it does ring any bells can someone please direct me as to what I'm doing.. Sorry for the lack of mechanical terms- this bike has been one big learning expierence for me..
marked23 Posted August 8, 2012 Posted August 8, 2012 Are you asking about adding some lube to the splines? I've never seen a tutorial about how to do that, but I've heard it's possible. I am interested to see what people say.
Linz Posted August 8, 2012 Posted August 8, 2012 Well, I preface this by saying, I've never done it. I've read here about the spinal tap unit and the Moly paste which is used on clutch splines so that's what I think you need. The Spinal Tap unit appears to be a long spouted delivery device to apply thin moly paste to the splines. I'm sure that others will chime in. Cheers, Linz
Trullion Posted August 8, 2012 Posted August 8, 2012 Dunno about spinal tap - thought it was a spoof rock band; I just used a long artist's paint brush (paint brush is long, not the artist - although he or she might be; I've never met him/her)to add a little of the BMW moly paste through the aperture temporarily vacated by the starter motor. Some advocate Honda Moly 60; the point is it should be moly paste, not grease. While you're in there you might as well frighten yourself about how thin the clutch plate is compared to a new one....I did.
Michaelr11 Posted August 8, 2012 Posted August 8, 2012 Somebody will say that this can't work. Mine is a sample of one, and until I remove my transmission or I have a breakdown I have no proof, just an anecdotal story. My splines and clutch self-destructed on a new to me R1100RT at 50k miles, 3 1/2 years ago. A while after the rebuilt trans was in, I started getting the difficult downshifting, so I decided to try putting Moly60 on the splines through the gap at the starter. It worked! Within 40 miles of riding there was a distinct change in shifting, with downshift tightness gone. It is so easy to remove the starter, that I have reapplied the Honda Moly60 several times. I use a very small art brush and paint the Moly60 directly onto the splines where the clutch hub meets them. I believe that the moly mix works its way in along the splines.
scottnew Posted August 8, 2012 Author Posted August 8, 2012 That's it the splines.. I thought I had read about this procedure on here before and how it helps prolong life.. Its not a perfect job, but its better than nothing and I would surely think it helps at least a little bit.. Thanks everyone for the Moly60 technical product help and esp the pictures. I'll be looking in the starter hole this evening with a good flashlight to get an idea of which size artist paint brush my wife is soon to be missing lol
scottnew Posted August 9, 2012 Author Posted August 9, 2012 Ok, so I can see the splines that I'm after to lube.. Getting to them doesn't appear to be to hard.. Are we talking about just a little dab of lube, on the centre stand, rotate the rear tire in gear, apply a little more, and so on? Just wanna cover my bases before I over/under do this and either waste my time of throw lube into places its not supposed to go..
Michaelr11 Posted August 9, 2012 Posted August 9, 2012 Yep, look at the earlier photo. The transmission is to the right, the clutch hub is on the left. Paint the splines at the juncture of the clutch hub; rotate the splines with the transmission/wheel and continue applying Moly60 around the entire spline shaft.
scottnew Posted August 9, 2012 Author Posted August 9, 2012 Ok good deal- will do and thanks for the follow up.. Also, Thanks to Philbytx for the advice of using Euromotoelectrics for my new starter and battery.. Order arrived today, complete, and everything looks great.. Looking very forward to getting home this afternoon to lube splines, mount new starter and battery, and put my new tire back on
