Paul Mihalka Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 The plan for my big ride in September/October is taking shape. General idea is cross the big center, spend a week or so in California/Utah, cross back East and meet the FARTers in Maggie Valley NC, home. To ride the mid-west I just pick small towns along the way at the right distance, with some econo-motel next to the highway. So: 9/16 SU: I70/I68/I70/I74 Sykesville MD - Crawfordsville IN 9/17 MO: I74/I72/rt. 36 Belleville KS 9/18 TU: rt. 36/I70 Rifle CO 9/19 WE: I70/rt. 50 Eureka NV - now it gets better: 9/20 TH: rt. 50/rt. 89 Chester CA. I have my eyes on the Cedar Lodge. Anybody knows it? 9/21 FR: rt. 36/rt. 299 to the coast ( I picked 299, I've done 36), rt. 101 South to Willits CA for the night - I've done rt 1 from Fort Bragg to SF before. 9/22 SA: 101 to San Francisco, a short stop but I've been there. Visit with good friend Ted Porter at Beemershop-Scotts Valley. Salinas CA for the night - not so expensive as Scotts Valley/Monterey. 9/23 SU: Rt. 1 to Solvang CA (!), visit the motorcycle museum, stay for the night. 9/24 MO: loop around Sherman Pass as discussed in other thread, Fairview, hopefully McNally's, for the night. 9/25 TU: To Coarsegold CA to Joe's (Coarsegoldkid) house (thanks again!!!) via Sequoia NP. 9/26 WE: Pass hunting loop out East over 108/Sonoma Pass, 395 North, back West over 4/Ebbets Pass to Joe. 9/27 TH: 120/Tioga Pass to rt. 6 Benton, CA, on to Tonopah, stop for the night in Caliente NV. 9/28 FR: Torrey!!! 9/30 SU to 10/5 FR 6 days to Maggie Valley, not yet planned. 10/7-8 home... Opinions/suggestions/recommendations are very welcome!
tallman Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 I suggest you have a great time and we meet for a fart.
Uni Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 I would do 36 from Chester all the way to the coast. 299 has much more traffic. Lots of RVs. Slow going. We did 299 in late June and there were also road work delays. Long, frustrating day. I know you said you have done 36 but it's a much better motorcycle road than 299. Jeff
ElevenFifty Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 Just rode 36 a couple of weeks ago ... some slight delay for construction but the road is is great condition ... no traffic to speak of but the occasional logging truck or tanker does make one more cautious. I rode it west to east ... would love to do it again east to west. Sounds like a great trip.
Dennis Andress Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 9/22 SA: 101 ..... Salinas CA for the night - not so expensive as Scotts Valley/Monterey. Phil's Fish Market in Moss Landing for dinner... 9/23 SU: Rt. 1 to Solvang CA (!) That put's you about 80 miles from our door, if you'd like to drop by for dinner and a room we'd enjoy your company. Boney posted this map of riding roads a couple of years ago. Lot's of good roads there.

Paul Mihalka Posted August 6, 2012 Author Posted August 6, 2012 "That put's you about 80 miles from our door, if you'd like to drop by for dinner and a room we'd enjoy your company." PM sent. "Same offer for dinner and room if you get to Brookings,OR." Thank you so much, but this time staying South or Oregon.
KTM Doug Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 Paul, Best motel in Eureka, NV is the Best Western Eureka Inn, about 90 bucks senior rate. Was ok the several times we have stayed there. The Solvang museum is well worth the stop.
Paul Mihalka Posted August 7, 2012 Author Posted August 7, 2012 Thank you but I'm a bit counting the pennies. From Internet I picked in Eureka the Sundown Lodge. My reservation call was amazing. The lady who took the call only wanted my name and phone number. She VERY nicely just asked me to call them if I can't make it. No credit card deposit. I asked for cancellation policy before I knew no credit card needed - no, just please call them. I mentioned I'm coming by bike. Oh, great, she'll hold a first floor room I can park in front. $48.10.
Endobob Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 9/30 SU to 10/5 FR 6 days to Maggie Valley, not yet planned. 10/7-8 home... Your trip sounds fantastic! I'm flying back out to Colorado Springs on 9/28 to pick up my bike and plan on leaving on 10/1 for the ride back to DC via the FART. Hope we end up crossing paths before meeting up at the FART. Bob

Jeff Was thru 299 about two weeks after you,was a weekend, but passed a lot of those construction zones and could easily see long delays would be possible. Recommend checking Caltrans website for construction updates and even then still recommend 36. JR356
mrzoom Posted August 8, 2012 Posted August 8, 2012 Paul, what a trip . 3 weeks, wow. Yes you better count your pennies. What is this trip really costing?? A new kitchen, remodeling the bathrooms, trip to Europe??. Wives don't let us out for that long without strings. Enjoy my friend, hope to see you at the fart.
