scottnew Posted August 4, 2012 Posted August 4, 2012 Ordering a new starter today from EME ( Euro Motoelectrics). I see they have two starters to choose from.. In past expierences I always tend to go with the factory part. However, I'm considering trying the EME brand starter instead of the Valeo. ( Starter - BMW R Oilhead; Replaces VALEO D6RA55, D6RA75; 12 41 2 306 700 / EnDuraLast) Price wise the offset in cost is about $70.00.. Not a ton of money, but every little bit counts.. Nonetheless, I don't want to cheap out and regret my purchase only to go back with the Valeo.. Any thoughts-- I'm Dazed and confused on which way to go?
Boffin Posted August 4, 2012 Posted August 4, 2012 The Valeo in its earliest guise was known to have its magnets become detached. The starter itself is a standard part used on some small oriental cars - so the alternative should be low-risk. Andy
scottnew Posted August 4, 2012 Author Posted August 4, 2012 I do believe I'll try the aftermarket one I spoke with my mechanic bud at the dealer today about it while he put a new tire on the back.. He said the aftermarket seem to do pretty well.. However, the Valeo are nice because they can be rebuilt.. So, After that I thought to myself- go with the cheaper now, then rebuild or get my Valeo that is pulled off redone..

Andy I think you mean small European cars? Care is needed because some run the other way; also the BMW drive is needed. I'd be interested to know where the cheaper alternative is made - China? I decided to get a new Valeo when my original one started to stick. One day I'll get round to giving it a good clean, ready to fit when (if)the replacement fails. The new one is different to the original in that there is no shoulder on the pinion, which is longer, but it has worked ok for two years now without the dreaded ABS low voltage warning light syndrome.
scottnew Posted August 7, 2012 Author Posted August 7, 2012 After a good bit of pondering which way to go I went cheap on the aftermarket.. I know it seems silly but I thought what the heck.. I also have a new battery on the way.. I'm very excited to finally get a battery that actually fits into the battery tray.. I had in the past been using a larger battery that in comparison put out the same amps and whatnot's.. It was my temporary testing battery to see if this thing would even start after sitting for so long.. Anyway, gonna order a new solenoid for the Valeo starter- only forty bucks That way I;ll have a good replacement starter for after my cheap one cuts out, which hopefully isn't any time soon.. For what its worth on the aftermarket- I got the one that was more expensive than the other cheapest ones.. Long story getting longer- I should have my new starter and battery in a few days or so With those and my fancy new rear tire- that I have yet to re-mount due to that fact it'll make me want to ride sooner than I can.. I'll hopefully be on the road this weekend Then its on to brakes and all of that fun stuff Not to worry, the bike does have stopping power now.. Just not all that it could be
