That's the lodging info Paul and is a bit out of date - I'll fix it.

http://www.bobpalin.com/howlongtotorrey.htm is the up to date page. A thread will probably appear here on BMWST soon.

The link above pretty much explains it. Torrey is not a Rally. Twice a year it is an informal gathering for the purpose of enjoying good company, getting to know board members, and riding some beautiful areas. There's no signup. There's no fee. The town of Torrey, UT, is the base location, and Randy Austin's Chuckwagon Inn serves as the informal center of the gathering, but people stay everywhere.

Looks to be the same weekend as Carmageddon Part 2.... makes it all that much more enticing.

Hookman, get to Utah any way you can for Fall Torrey 2012.

Come by cabin #9 at the Chuckwagon and introduce yourself we will be there Monday/Tuesday before and stay till Monday after.

The rest will just happen.

Be careful.....BMWST Torrey events can change your life.

For Torrey, that's about as close to an itinerary as it gets.

Don't let them fool you. You don't have to enter the cabin. They will hunt you down to haze you...

Thanks Comrades for the info. I have already book the Motel at the Capitol Reef Inn & Cafe back in June. Plan on arriving on Thursday evening with another rider if all goes well up through the Moki Dugway.

Looking forward to meeting the group and carving up some of the twisities.

Most people who've stayed there do not recommend it...

The Boulder View is plain but nice.

The Rim Rock is a couple of miles out of town, but the sunsets can't be beat.

The Chuckwagon may not have rooms available for that weekend right now. But get your name on their list. There are usually enough cancellations that everyone on the list gets a room.

Torrey can best be described as a town of 1200 people, three restaurants, two waitresses. And sadly now a days, one Utah Hwy Patrol officer  It's a special place, but you've got to take it the way it is. The roads are great. The people are what make the trip.

Huh? There are about 200 people. I can think of 16 places for food if you include the burger/pizza joints and the coffee shops.

Cafe Diablo

Saddlery

Capitol Reef Inn

Robber's Roost (coffee shop)

Chuckwagon (deli)

Red Cliff - pizza & burgers (formerly Chillzzz)

Slackers - burgers

Subway

Castle Rock Coffee Shop

La Cueva

Best Western

Rim Rock

Maybe Dennis was thinking of the county having 1200 resident.

Google.com/publicdata 179 - Jul2011. Wow 16 restaurants...maybe one night we could hit all 16 and have a "Buffet to go".

2500 people in the county (2400 square miles, my square mile is way out in the desert somewhere!)

(He probably meant 200 and it was a typo)

I stayed at Capitol Reef and I liked it.

However, I thought they had a boycott on or something, as they had supported closing off road trails, or something.

Heard they were opening a Chick-Fil-A in Torrey

Hey All!

Once again, Cindy and I are late in booking...We are officially on the waiting list for the ChuckWagon!

We couldn't pass up seeing ya'll again!! We're going to Torrey!

I don't know about the Tar Snakes in TX, but the species in Utah is very different from the one in CA. Beware the UT Tar Snakes. In the cold, or hot it makes no diff, they are treacherous.

I stand corrected. There are still only 2 wiatresses...

Posted

Yep the Tar Snakes in Tx are soft & squishy and in the winter can be like small road bumps.

I do recall that the road surface there in Utah is somewhat different for bike handling then what I'm used to.

thanks for the reminder.

I have stayed at the Capital Reef several times and like it fine.

It is not elegant but it is accommodating.

The reason I never stay at the Capital Reef Motel is the check in and check out is SO hard. The 1.5 waitresses in the restaurant have to do it and if you hit at meal time you can literally wait 30 minutes or more. Some people are patient but I'm not. Rooms are fine. Boulder Inn is my choice. Which reminds me I better get a RSVP!

Posted

Actually the last few times I've stayed in the little cabins at Torrey Trading Post across the street from the Chuckwagon. I just booked Weds and Thursday nights as I am also going to the BMWMOA rally in Cedar City the next 3 days.

Posted

These are all good things to know about the Motels in Torrey. My plan is the only time I'll be there is to sleep. You know they do have complimentary toiletries in every room. :)

Besides, I was thinking the party will be at the #9 at the Chuckwagon. Will someone be packing a blender?

Dennis: I,ve stayed at the Capitol Reef about 6 times now and I would stay there again. The rooms are rustic but they tell you that on their website so it should not be a surprise. The price is right and I have never had any uninvited critters in the room. I got involved in a memorable hot tub wine fest there about five years ago with a group of colorful travellers. I keep going back there in the off chance there will be an encore event. It is also handy to fine breakfast dining if you can negotiate the wavy floors.

The down side is that it is not where most of the BMWSPORTTOURING crowd assemble. I don't know anything about the owner's politics.

We've stayed at Capital Reef Inn twice and it's fine. Beware of the differences between the morning and the evening waitress...it's like night and day. Rooms are large, there is a hot tub (never used it), wifi works. And checkout when there is no crowd as the waitresses have to do everything.

PS. They sell a great Colombian coffee for a very reasonable price.

After leaving my life altering event in Torrey, we will be heading back through Colorado to catch some of the Fall colors. If Mother Nature will allow us to go through Independence Pass down to Buena Vistas and onto Gunnison and the Million $ Highway into Durango. I was wondering if Anyone has taken the road from Cottonwood Pass road (306 & 209) outside of Buena Vistas to Taylor River Canyon via (Forest Road 742)? This road (FR 742) links to 135 down into Gunnison Colorado. I have read that this is hard packed road and did a view with Google Earth. This road (FR 742) doesn’t look to bad. Any feedback on this route?

Thanks,

Hookman

Yes, that is exactly the way I went last year, September.

It is a very fine road. Much more fun than the pass to the south.

Hi Hookman,

My wife and I were on the exact roads just a few weeks ago at the uN rally. We were on an RT and the road was fine other than some road construction delay around Almont. Watch out for the water truck guy, he doesn't seem to like motorcyclists and might spray ya. Great vistas in the mountains, you shouldn't be disappointed. Another pass that was very RT doable was the Marshall Pass that goes over to Sargents. Lots of Aspen groves, should be great in the Fall. Have a good time

Thanks David13 & Lbump for the update information. Is it Sept. Yet?

Hookman and I plan on riding through Colorado after Torrey if the weather cooperates. We are probably going to ride through the Salida area. Since a lot of you have been there recently, are there roads you would recommend over others?

Posted

Hey Torrey Chief..... Did anyone come up an Ideal of a shirt yet? The FARTS are working on theirs and we can't let the FARTS shirt be better.

Posted

I have finalized my plan which is ride thru' Rocky Mtn Natl Park, then down to Durango to ride the Durango & Silverton train.

Then over to Torrey.

That may mean that I rest a bit rather than following the preplanned agenda in Torrey.

Also that I won't bring my club blazer, so I will miss the dinner.

KILLER are you getting a dirt bike ride list ready for posting??

Rode it the opposite direction in the rain on my RT recently, no issues. Kinda bumpy in places, and parts are under construction, which can cause some waiting for the pilot car...no big deal.

Thanks, Tim. You're always thinking of others. :P

But keep it in your pocket. It got a brand-new fuel rail, regulator and fuel lines before I went to the Un in Salida. Tight as a drum, and the mileage went from 41 to 44.
