tgregg Posted August 2, 2012 Posted August 2, 2012 I'm heading North on 89 Monday. I have some loops off the hwy as I go North with a final destination in Idaho Falls before returning home. Since 89 starts close by the house and I travel it often I'm going to go up 15 to 20 and up 89 from there. Anybody have some side trips or "stuff" I shouldn't miss.
Bob Palin Posted August 3, 2012 Posted August 3, 2012 Probably too late now but there's a great book about Hwy 89 written by a Torrey resident Ann Torrance http://www.amazon.com/U-S-Highway-89-Scenic-National/dp/0970313055/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=books it's much more than just the National Parks. She spent 3 years traveling up and down the highway.
EffBee Posted August 3, 2012 Posted August 3, 2012 Yes, in Fairview, UT, take UT31 to the east. Also known as Huntington Canyon. It's about 35 miles long and is an absolutely marvelous road. The climb to the 9400 ft. summit isn't much. But the long descent into Huntington, UT, is a combination of racetrack left/rights, sweepers, long and lazy bends around two gorgeous reservoirs, and a section with a river and waterfals off the road's south edge. Turn around, go back, gas up at the Chevron in Fairview and continue north on 89. I'll bet you take a side trip on 31 on your way back, too. Every time I go to Torrey, I get asked to lead a ride to Huntington Canyon. It's that good.
Bob Palin Posted August 3, 2012 Posted August 3, 2012 UT31 through Huntington Canyon is currently closed due to rocks and debris from our little weather event, not expected to open for at least several days.

hopz Posted August 3, 2012 Posted August 3, 2012 Gregg... If you have not ridden the Mt. Nebo Loop... this would be a perfect time, either Northbound or Southbound. Look at a map for Nebo Loop Road, between Payson and Nephi. If you are nortbound on 89, you can turn to the west at several locations. 89 is a nice ride between Salina and Spanish Fork, but after that it is basically I-15 and congestion till you get past Ogden. 89 through Logan Canyon is good but if you want an alternative you might look into Monte Cristo.

Thanks, I'm taking all my maps so I can make side trips. I've written tracks up 89 but I'm taking my laptop so I can adjust as I go. If you're not a dual sport rider you don't know what I mean about tracks. We draw out routes in Mapquest and then upload to a Garmin (76 in my case). My wife says I have more fun planning a trip than actually riding it, she is part right. A friend just posted on Face Book RIDING A MOTORCYCLE ISN'T A MATTER OF LIFE OR DEATH, IT IS MUCH MORE IMPORTANT THAN THAT!
