dickins Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I am new to this forum and to Bmw,picked up my 06 1200st two weeks ago..Here are my first impressions(please note, first ride ever on a bm after two yrs on a Suzgsx1250) 1/ What a weird rattly sounding engine.Does not feel as pokey as the Suz, although supposed to be 10bhp more.Gets a bit vibey at 90+mph 2/Gearchange,after reading the forums I was expecting a lot worse,it's actually smoother than the Suzuki. 3/Is the clonking normal when on and off the throttle when slow manouvering? 4/Riding position feels quite sporty, seat made my backside ache. 5/Suspension and handling feel better than the Suz,more stable. 6/Brakes feel awesome(are they linked?) 7/Six year old bike looks in better fettle than the Suz did after six months. 8/Adjusting the seat takes a minute not half a hour with the spanners. 9/Indicators do seem a little strange at first, but are quite intuitive after a couple of hours. Servo thing is a bit worrying.I have taken out twelve months warranty with 'Warranty Direct',so ,although I hope I don't have to use them,it's a little peace of mind. Thats it for now, will post pics when I take some.
TestPilot Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 Dickins, I have an 07 ST and love it. Here are my answers to a few of your questions. 3) Yes, the clonking when on and off the throttle at low speed is normal. It's the lash in the drive system. 4) The ST has the original seat from hell. I got a Bill Mayer replacement, but others are also very good. My new seat allows me to ride all day. 6) The brakes are partially linked. Applying the front activates both; applying the rear activates only the rear.
DoctorC Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 I had my seat redone in a local shop.. not expensive and matched the bike's colors beautifully. I did not want to ship the seat pans. Replaced shocks early on - made a huge difference. You'll get used to the servo... though panned in the press, I like it. Interesting that you like the handling.. I find low speed handling challenging at times, though rock solid bike at speed. Enjoy the ride!
sardineone Posted August 8, 2012 Posted August 8, 2012 Dickens, welcome to this forum. As others have said, brakes are linked. The rear pedal for some reason has terrible feel and modulation. By using both front lever and rear pedal the rear just gets worse with 2 inputs. Solution is to trust the linked system and use only the front lever for all stopping except when about stopped or not wanting the front brakes applied. The seat is pretty bad, not just you.
xoomerite Posted August 11, 2012 Posted August 11, 2012 I have a 2005 R1200ST that I got in 2007 with 4400 miles on it. I have been everywhere on it. 105,000 miles and still fantastic. After market shocks will make a lot of difference. An improvement in the seat will make an even bigger difference. Take it out and ride. Enjoy. Chris
