oil temp comes and goes

2001 RTP1100, 66k miles.

Oil temp indicator started staying on 3 bars even with 100 degree temps outside. Then it would work, then oil temp quit but fuel side worked fine. Temp works sporadically. Clean oil and filter.

Any ideas?

When the oil temp indicator on my '96 1100RS stayed at 2 bars despite the engine being up to normal temperature it turned out to be a dodgy connector on the RID i.e. its connector to the main wiring loom. A good clean of the connector restored it to full working order. Everything else in the RID worked fine. I have had an oil temp sensor pack up. This affected the fuelling (too rich), but that particualr bike didn't have a RID so I don't know whether or not you would get the symtoms your bike is showing. As it seems intermittent I would check the connector.

Good luck.

Hi,

The Rider Information Display (RID) containing the Oil Temp Gauge is connected to the Main Wiring loom via a connector behind the black dash panel on the upper RH side. This is the one that needs to be checked/cleaned with contact cleaner.

Next, check the Oil Temp Sensor itself and its connector for corrosion or cable damage.

The Oil Temp Sensor is located on the RH side of the bike by the side of the alternator just in front of the oil pipe/hose engine block connection which comes from the oil cooling radiator thermostat block.

Trace the cable from the sensor to its connector on the front, top of the Motronic Engine Management Unit.

Oil Temp Sensor – testing of:

Remove the fuel tank.

Disconnect the wire going to the Oil Temp Sensor at the RH side of the bike in front of the ECU.

Test the Oil Temp Sensor by connecting an Ohmmeter across pins 1 & 2 of the sensor. At 3 deg C [37 F] the sensor should measure around 44 K Ohms. At 25 deg C [77 F] the sensor should measure around 2 K Ohms. At 100 deg C [212 F] the sensor should measure around 220 ohms.

Is the fan coming on?

Fan is not coming on. Never gets that hot and I won't sit in traffic and let it go over 6 bars.

I will clean display plugs first and see what happens.
