some more folks started to show up at the cabin:

Then we decided to head out on a beautiful loop that roadscholar took me and Dave Hanson out on while we were returning from Torrey last year.

saw these guys perched above us just outside of salida:

this route carries one up and out of salida North/Northeast a bit then heads up to buena vista via some forest roads. We picked up pat (tewks) at lunch there and gassed up for the run up cottonwood pass. The load of gas my little DR got did not agree with it and with very black clouds and lightening gathering over the peak, I turned my little DR around and beat it south down 285 back to Salida while everyone else continued on, I let keith know on the sena's I was bailing as the bike was running poorly. As I understand it, somebody from TX on a KTM turned around after the peak and some rain and mud and packed it in as well. Probably not a bad decision.

I headed back to the cabin, hopped off the DR, hung out and had a coke, and hopped on the GS and headed around to the end of the loop starting around it backwards to meet Bill, Chris, Keith, Jean and Dave, and I thought Whip at some point. That point turned out to be the little town of Pitkin:

turns out, my timing was good, as the group was turning around to head up Alpine tunnel, a nice ride up an old railroad bed around 3 miles back. At the top:

Well, we headed back to down to Pitkin, back over black sage and wuanita passes and out towards sargents, taking the left hand turn to cut the corner over the top of monarch pass, via Old Monarch Pass. Then it began to rain a bit and not to far up that pass road, difficulties were encountered:
