Rapala 50 Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 Just notice that the oil indicator check mark does not come on when I stopped the bike in the garage. I let the bike sit for a bit on the center stand and checked the oil level and it's fine. The indicator worked fine the day before, it's something I always look at when I pull into the garage. Like always I'm sure D.R. Has the answer..lol
dirtrider Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 Afternoon Rapala That check mark oil level is kind of fickle on the 1200 hexheads. One day it will be there & the next it won't. Basically for that the check mark to come on: *The engine must be running (idling). *The engine must be at operating temperature. *The engine must have been idling for at least 30 seconds. *The motorcycle must be stopped. *I believe it needs to be in neutral. *The side stand must be retracted (up). *The motorcycle should be straight up & not leaned over.
Rapala 50 Posted July 31, 2012 Author Posted July 31, 2012 Yes to everything you just listed D.R., thought about disconnecting the battery and doing a re-learn of the computer see if that would make a difference. Also I ran out of gas AGAIN yesterday, damm fuel strip, had 251 miles on the tripometer and thought I was safe, gauge seams to work fine but no yellow indicator came on. Looks like I will have to have it replaced. I do most of my own work on it but that's over my head, I don't have a GS 911 yet but plan on purchasing one.

The engine must be idling for only 10 seconds. There is no need for the transmission to be in neutral. Everything else is correct...
SPX Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 Also, just to confirm... Are you going to the oil page using the info button? Or are you waiting for the page to automatically come up? If you want the page to automatically come up, then you must have manually brought it up, or had it automatically come up, at your last stop. If you are manually bringing up the page, then I assume you're simply seeing Oil --. Is that correct?
hopz Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 All those things... if you say so, and the wire from the Oil Level Sensor must be intact. I always thought that that wire was in a vulnerable location.
Albert Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 One other thing to check. You'll undoubtedly know that when you are moving, the oil check is replaced by the outside temperature (at least mine is). There is a mode (using the BC button) where the oil check is not displayed, only temperature. Make sure you didn't inadvertently hit that. If so you'll need to cycle through the BC again to get back to oil check mode.
dirtrider Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 --The engine must be idling for only 10 seconds. AFtrenoon SPX Not according to the 08 riders manual I have in front of me here (it says 30 seconds). Are you sure you aren't using an ealier riders manual like the 2005RT riders manual? There was a software update that went in later in the production run that changed a few things.

Are you sure you aren't using an ealier riders manual like the 2005RT riders manual? There was a software update that went in later in the production run that changed a few things. Hmm.. Interesting; My 2011 manual spells out ten seconds, and I believe that my 2005 did as well. I wonder why BMW would switch from ten, to thirty, and back to ten? When I head into work this morning, I'll bring up the oil page, and see if the checkmark comes up in ten or thirty seconds.
dirtrider Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 --- thought about disconnecting the battery and doing a re-learn of the computer see if that would make a difference. ---- Afternoon Rapala Disconnecting the battery will gain you nothing on things like the oil check. That is controlled by the firmware/software with nothing dynamic for the computer to learn. What you gain (or lose) with a battery disconnect is dynamic things like the fueling adaptives & TPS threshold learning.

Afternoon SPX I have a 2010 1200RT riders manual in front of me here & on page 56 it says 30 seconds. I don't have a 2011 riders manual but are you sure it says 10 seconds.

mrzoom Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 One more thing, you have to have someone stand on your left and throw a black cat over you and the bike to get a correct reading or is it stand on the right??
David13 Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 And also the service indicator words. And maybe the motorcycle date. However, that is not important if you want to ignore the service or maintenance, whatever it says on the start up. Or if you have or know someone with a GS911 to reset the date and check engine feature. dc
SPX Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 On my ride to work this morning, oil stayed dashed (--) at each stop until roughly 10 seconds after the stop, then the check mark appeared.
Rapala 50 Posted July 31, 2012 Author Posted July 31, 2012 Mine is just saying OIL---, I look at this everytime I pull in the garage and at stop lights and signs. Have always seen the check mark come on but not yesterday. Maybe it will work tomorrow...It's a BMW computer thing I guess
Deek Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 Afternoon Rapala That check mark oil level is kind of fickle on the 1200 hexheads. One day it will be there & the next it won't. Basically for that the check mark to come on: ...... *I believe it needs to be in neutral. ... Not on my '06 or '09. I try to check my oil "check" indicator at stop lights or when I've pulled into a gas or eating station before I dismount.

If you are manually bringing up the page, then I assume you're simply seeing Oil --. Is that correct? I've never done that. I mainly leave the computer in the "Temperature" setting.....then look for the oil check indicator at stops. It's not always there, but probably at least 50% of the time.
I812 Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 Also I ran out of gas AGAIN yesterday, damm fuel strip, had 251 miles on the tripometer and thought I was safe, gauge seams to work fine but no yellow indicator came on. Looks like I will have to have it replaced. Not alone there brother!
Rapala 50 Posted August 3, 2012 Author Posted August 3, 2012 Things seam to back to normal, oil check came back for no reason at all. Funny thing these BMW computer's.....
