conwaykraM Posted July 28, 2012 Posted July 28, 2012 Awkward situation.... I was not very careful when I parked my 1100RT at a local restaurant. When I went to leave.... you guessed it. I lost it. There is just not a lot I can do when the 1100RT gets in an awkward position.(I have had a few close calls but never had it fall before. ) I had to watch it s l o w l y fall. Got a few scratches on the front right cowling. My question --- what is the best way to get rid of small scratches. Any helpful hints appreciated. And - where can I get some touch up paint? Gotta be more careful and not get in those awkward positions. Gotta go - put ice on my back. Awaiting your much appreciated suggestions about my body issues.
Tobias Posted July 28, 2012 Posted July 28, 2012 It depends on how bad the scratches are and how picky you are. Did it just scratch the clear coat, or did it go through the paint (posting pictures would help) Touch up paint is only good for very minor scratches, anything bigger than that I would talk to an autobody shop.
Quinn Posted July 28, 2012 Posted July 28, 2012 If it doesn't bother the aerodynamics and if your friends will still ride with you, I'd put off fixing it for a year or three and see if I can add some more scratches before doing anything about it. But then, my bike is black and I can use shoe polish to minimize notice. -----
azccj Posted July 28, 2012 Posted July 28, 2012 Having recently dropped my RT I can tell you it is very expensive to replace painted body parts. The big side fairing alone was about $1045.00 . I'm a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to my bikes so that little accident cost $3000+ to fix. I will say that the replaced fairing parts, tail, mirror, belly pan and side fairing are a perfect color match to the original fairing. I will also say that you can minimize the apparence of the scratches by using some rubbing compound followed by a fine scratch removal compound. I did this while waiting for the new parts to arrive. While there was no way to remove the scratches entirely without a having the parts painted, it made a big difference in how bad the scratches stood out.
