OlGeezer Posted July 27, 2012 Posted July 27, 2012 For those of you who have the newer models with the service indicator light, is that something you can turn off or must the dealer reset it? I know that, in my 4Runner, I get a maintenance light that comes on every 5k miles reminding me to change my oil. I change my oil then, based on instructions in my owner's manual, I can reset the light. If you are doing your own maintenance, how do you address this issue?
dirtrider Posted July 27, 2012 Posted July 27, 2012 Afternoon OlGeezer Only 2 ways that I know of to turn the service reminder off: Use a GS-911 or have the dealer do it.
David13 Posted July 27, 2012 Posted July 27, 2012 I address the issue by resetting it with the GS911. I also do that for other bikes, in addition to my own. dc
Ponch Posted July 27, 2012 Posted July 27, 2012 You pay one way or another. I wonder if the GS911 works on the newer bikes like the 1600? Anyway, I like to call it the dealer extortion light. I ignore it, at least until I buy a GS911 or have someone with one reset it to Infinity.
dirtrider Posted July 27, 2012 Posted July 27, 2012 Evening Ponch Unfortunately you can't set them to infinity or turn the darn thing off. With the GS-911 you can set it far enough in the future to not bother you for a coupe of years though.
David13 Posted July 27, 2012 Posted July 27, 2012 It will not reset to infinity. How far it will reset I'm not sure. I think it's two years, or something. However, if you reset the bikes date to somewhere in the far future ... But that might expire all the software or something ... The HexCode website will state which models are covered. I have not found a guinea pig 1600 as yet. dc

What I've found out that this is a dealer interview question. I called BMW Motorcycles of Long Beach and asked the question. I was told that, if I bought a bike from them and wanted to do my own service, they would reset the light at no charge. If a dealer responded in any other way, I would keep on walking. However, the GS911 seems like the best route.

dirtrider Posted July 28, 2012 Posted July 28, 2012 Morning OlGeezer You really don't need any tape as it really isn't a light just the service reminder. Once riding most don't even notice it there as the dash washes out so bad in the sun you can't even see any of the LCD items.

K12LTS Posted July 29, 2012 Posted July 29, 2012 I wonder if the GS911 works on the newer bikes like the 1600? I talked to the GS911 folks at the BMW MOA National last week. The current GS911 will not work with the new K1600 and may not work on the new 2013 R1200RT or whatever it's going to be. He said it's a new system and will require different hardware to interface. He did say when they make the new tool they will also make it compatible with the iPhone for Bluetooth use, not just the Droid or Blackberry.
