1springer Posted July 26, 2012 Posted July 26, 2012 Just went out to ride the RT and as it was warming up (about 1 bar) something started squealing. It last only about 5 - 10 seconds then disappeared. i have noticed a short chirp the last couple of mornings but today it last a few seconds. It sounds a lot like a belt slipping on a car and only occurs on a cold start. The bike was in neutral on the side stand at about 1100 RPM Other then that it seems to run fine. I had the oil changed a couple of hundred miles ago and the level is fine. The bile has about 21,000 on it. Any ideas what it might be?
Jim Moore Posted July 26, 2012 Posted July 26, 2012 I would bet on the alternator belt. In fact, I'd pull the cover off and take a look at it. If it's coming apart it can make a mess of the HES, which is a couple hundred bucks to replace.
dirtrider Posted July 26, 2012 Posted July 26, 2012 Afternoon 1springer Without you telling us the general area that the noise is coming from we are just guessing from afar with little substance. Next time you get the noise try pulling the clutch lever in or pulling the clutch lever in & putting the trans in gear. (if this changes the noise possibly you have slave cylinder bearing going out) Then try revving the engine a few times (if that makes it squeal even more or go right away then suspect the alternator belt slipping) If it were my bike I would for sure check the alternator belt (if you have a later model 1150 with the elastomer belt then some cold squeal can even be normal, especially if the belt is wet from bike washing).
roger 04 rt Posted July 26, 2012 Posted July 26, 2012 I saw in his profile that it's an R1150RT 2004. When I got mine it had pretty much the same symptoms and the dealer and I agreed he replaced the elastomer belt. The squealing went away. A month later (or less) it was back. This time I put my ear closer to the moving parts. The starter pinion gear was hanging out for a bit. the main shaft needed lube and the solenoid needed cleaning and light lube. I'm with the majority as it happens moments after the starter motor should be disengaged, listen for the belt and test it as DR said, but if that's not it I'd listen near the starter motor (which is like most things underneath the fairings).
1springer Posted July 26, 2012 Author Posted July 26, 2012 Thanks, I'll give the suggestions a try and see what happens. Hopefully it is only the belt.
1springer Posted July 28, 2012 Author Posted July 28, 2012 Tried several times today to get the noise to reappear, nothing.
