Eh2Zee Posted July 26, 2012 Posted July 26, 2012 For the last few weeks I have been adding stuff to my 04 R1150RT. 1, FuzeBlock for extra circuits 2, PIAA lights for extra visibility (by others) 3, Cigarette lighter in the glove box for charging "stuff" 4, Instrument shelf 5, Hardwired GPS + power/traffic data supply #5 had me actually drill a hole (Oh Horrors! OMG!) in the dashboard. Whew. But done now. And it all seems to be working despite my efforts. One last modification/addition remains. So here is a question for the community - does the fan behind the oil cooler eliminate the traffic-jam overheat? TIA
dirtrider Posted July 26, 2012 Posted July 26, 2012 One last modification/addition remains. So here is a question for the community - does the fan behind the oil cooler eliminate the traffic-jam overheat? Morning Eh2Zee Can't really say as I haven't EVER overheated an oil head boxer in a traffic jam. I have had the temperature gauge go way up but no signs of engine overheating. Now I have actually overheated the BMW boxer in off-road conditions when getting stuck in deep sand then spending a long/long time using the engine to free it & get moving again. I still don't use an oil cooler fan. Keep in mind that on the BMW 1100/1150 the oil temp gauge is reading on the "cooling oil" EXITING the engine & prior to going through the oil cooler. If the gauge didn't go up in a traffic jam personally I would worry that the cooling side pump wasn't working properly & the cooling side oil wasn't picking up/removing engine heat. If you want to know what the oil temp is going through the engine to the bearings then put an oil temp gauge in the oil sump. Remember very/very few people are using oil cooler fans on their BMW 1100/1150 oil coolers & how many 1100/1150 engines do you ever hear about that have failed due to overheating?
