David R Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 One of the first things I did was change the lefe cam chain tensioner to the upgrade version. It worked great. Its been 3 years and 30k miles. I had it out when I rebuilt the motor. Its doing the same thing, clicking and clacking on startup especially after it sits for a while from good and hot. I ordered a new one from my local repair shop. He said they just put a second one in a machine last week. None in the warehouse, VOR ordered what ever that means. Probably 4 or so days till it gets here. David
mneblett Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 VOR ordered what ever that means. Vehicle On Rack -- a priority status.
dirtrider Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 Afternoon -- (VOR), In the auto industry we use it to mean-- "Vehicle Off Road" (therefore at an urgent repair need)
Tobias Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 I had read (on another forum) that at one time there was an intermediate upgrade for the cam chain tensioner. Did you have the current upgrade, or the intermediate upgrade (shown in this link) http://www.r1150r.net/board/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=13667 When you take it out would you post a photo of the worn out parts?
David R Posted July 26, 2012 Author Posted July 26, 2012 I have upgraded model, takes a 15mm wrench instead of the 17mm wrench. It has no spring. I may have even bought it from a member on here. Picture will be posted. I was at a "party" of bikers, all LOUD BIG V TWINS. It was a party my brother invited me to. All the folks had to come out and start their bikes so i could hear how cool they sounded. I had he quietest bike with the most miles on it and the smallest chicken strips. (none on the left, a little on the right). Time to leave, I put on my gear. When I fired the bike up, all I could hear was that timing chain "Chink Chink Chink" for the first few revolutions of the engine. I was a little embarrassed. My brother heard it and of course brought attention to it. I just put my feet on the pegs and putted away nice and slow. David
David R Posted July 26, 2012 Author Posted July 26, 2012 I was looking on Ebone and found this. http://www.ebay.com/itm/BMW-R1100-RT-R1100RT-LEFT-CAM-CHAIN-TENSIONER-/190076508818?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2c41715a92&vxp=mtr Its the old style. Maybe I should sell mine? Sheesh!
Bob H Posted July 27, 2012 Posted July 27, 2012 Try Rubber Chicken Racing Tom Cutter has a fantastic tensioner and also does a great job on rebuilding final drive http://rubberchickenracinggarage.com/
moshe_levy Posted July 27, 2012 Posted July 27, 2012 David- Bob is right. Call Tom Cutter. Get the kit. Follow instructions, here: http://www.mklsportster.com/Articles/mcncct.pdf (my article from MCN March 2009, written around Cutter's own method of installation). Easy as pie. 0-MKL
bmwnomad Posted July 27, 2012 Posted July 27, 2012 Or just go to your local BMW dealer (or any BMW dealer if you don't have one "local") and order the left cam chain tensioner for an R1200(RT,R,GS), same thing. You guys make it sound like Tom Cutter invented this thing...
