Lone_RT_rider Posted July 23, 2012 Posted July 23, 2012 So a while back (way too long ago) I managed to break loose the permanently attached hex feature on the throttle cable for my R1200RT. It makes for some really interesting throttle body syncs as well as what I will call a "floating" sync that changes quite literally with brisk throttle activation and a firm jarring of the bikes suspension. I think it's finally gotten to the point where it iritates me enough that I want to fix it. Besides, it gives me an excuse to wash the bike before I pull the panels off. LOL. Anyway, its the right throttle cable as seen below. I have done this replacement many times on my R1100RT. Is there a big difference between the R11RT and the R12RT throttle cable replacement? If so, does anyone have any pics of the install? It's this one....
Lone_RT_rider Posted July 24, 2012 Author Posted July 24, 2012 Anyone......Buehller......Buehller......
Joe Frickin' Friday Posted July 24, 2012 Posted July 24, 2012 I guess you're the first one to do this. Let the rest of us know how it goes.
dirtrider Posted July 24, 2012 Posted July 24, 2012 Morning Lone_RT_rider I haven't installed NEW cables yet but have had the originals disconnected. With the use of a mirror & some good hand manipulation you can get to un-hook & re-hook the cables in the Bowden box with the box still in the bike. The Bowden box cover comes off easily. I had the gas tank removed from the one I was working on & it was still a pain so I just can't imagine doing it with the tank still in place. I had to unclip & slide the outer cruise control cable cam out of the way to access the smaller TB cables.

Or is there another detachment method to getting the box to a point where the cables can be accessed? I would try the mirror method, but I dont tend to keep them around the house as I get older. lol. Shawn
dirtrider Posted July 26, 2012 Posted July 26, 2012 Afternoon Shawn Yes, after removing the R/H cable from the R/H TB there is a tab with a little detent on top of the Bowden box that you can lift/pry up then the box will slide out to the left. I mostly leave the box in place as the cover simply snaps off the front & the innards can be accessed with the box in place.
Lone_RT_rider Posted August 25, 2012 Author Posted August 25, 2012 I mostly leave the box in place as the cover simply snaps off the front & the innards can be accessed with the box in place. You forgot to warn me about the spring that loves to fly off the minute you touch it after removal of the cover! I must have chased that thing with a magnetic tool at least 3 times from underneath all of that mess. So, the job is done, the TBS is complete and smoother than it has been in many thousands of miles. Does anyone see and issue with the picture below? Let me give you a little tip.... And that boys and girls is how you get a self-modulating/self-adjusting throttle body sync that varies every time you hit a bump in the road or a blip of the throttle. Mechanic induced issue resolved! Shawn
WestyLancs Posted August 25, 2012 Posted August 25, 2012 Shawn No idea what caused yours, but the first time I tried a TBS I found my left hand cable adjuster to be split like that. I don't think I was heavy handed in my adjustment, but maybe I was. Being fotunate in having a good used parts dealer (Motorworks) only 45 mins ride away, I ordered a replacement, and went to pick it up. Much to my surprise, and theirs, that was also broken in the same place. Replacement replaced without question, and fitted and, as you say, TBS is now much easier and reliable.
