MarkD Posted July 23, 2012 Posted July 23, 2012 I recently purchased a my first BMW bike, a very nice Silver 2007 R1200RT. The bike came with the large BMW trunk. The color of the trunk seems to match the rest of the bike perfectly however it appears that the trunk was not clear coated like the rest of the bike. Would this be normal, or should the trunk be clear coated like the rest of the bike?
johnlt Posted July 23, 2012 Posted July 23, 2012 I too have a silver 2007 RT with the large trunk. I had it painted and clear coated to match the bike. The OEM finish is not clearcoated so the sheen is differen than the rest of the bike. Never did understand why BMW chose to do it that way. Maybe they consider the finish a primer and that folks will paint to match whatever colar their bike is.
MarkD Posted July 23, 2012 Author Posted July 23, 2012 Thanks for the quick response. It didn't look as though the trunk had been repainted, so I assumed it came that way. It doesn't make sense to me either, unless your assumption that folks would paint and clearcoat the trunk to match their bike is correct.
