How long to get part from Germany?

My bike is at the dealer for repair. The dealer ordered the needed part for my 2011 GS from Germany on June 8. I was told by the dealer it takes 10 business days for the part to get to him.

It's July 22. So far, no part and therefore, no bike!

Dealer says part is on the way but has no way to track it. Claims BMW does not have a system to let him know where a part is in the shipping process. He has no way to tell when it will arrive. He says he receives an invoice the day before it arrives - from Fed Ex.

Can you folks enlighten me? Have you had similar experiences? What options do I have?

I can track a shipment anywhere in the world on my computer on Fed Ex, UPS and USPS but BMW can't? Or won't?

Very frustrated.

I have had no problems with excessive delays with parts coming from Germany. Everything has arrived within a week or so. Maybe the problem is that the part that you need is back ordered. Your dealer should be able to tell you whether Germany (or NY or CA warehouses, and possibly elsewhere) has the part in stock, or whether it is back ordered. If they are unable to do that, something isn't right, because dealers DO have the ability to see that information.

Dealers also have the ability to grant you a loaner if the part can't be

delivered or the bike repaired in a reasonable amount of time.

Good luck

I can get parts straight from Germany in a week at most if the parts are at the BMW Logistic center near Erding.

It's very strange your dealer told you so since mine can tell me exactly how long it will take and the part will be there that day.

As an ultima ratio I can order the part for you at my dealer and ship it to you through UPS but shipping fees would probably kill you...

My dealer told me that when he ordered it, there were 17 in stock and now there are 16. I didn't seek a loaner as it is not a warranty repair.

Are dealers able to track shipments from Germany?

Here in Europe they are. I have no idea about the US.

Had my bike in for repair after I was rear ended almost two years ago.

Amongst the parts required was a trim panel which ended up taking 15 weeks from Germany.

Thinking the repair shop (non BMW) was taking the p***, I contacted my local BMW dealer,

who confirmed none available in the UK, and no idea how long for one from Germany.

Not much use if you're waiting, but illustrates that you're not alone.

I ordered a fairing piece for my RT earlier this year. The dealer let me know after I placed the order that the part was coming from Germany and to expect a delay. It took a little over a month before I had the $1050+ part in hand.

When I had my *event*, and had to order parts from Germany, they all showed up except one within 2-3 weeks. The last one never showed up.

Got word from the dealer that the part ordered in June WAS NEVER SHIPPED! There was a hold on it in Germany and had I not raised a little hell, the dealer would not have checked. Who knows when I'll get the bike back now. Not happy.

That's exactly the thing that can get a BMW dealer in trouble here. If enough similar complaints pile up, they will lose their license. My brother was contacted by the dealer the moment they knew a part for his M3 was to arrive four days later than originally planned.

Contact BMW NA and tell them about your experience.

Parts from Germany to Australia...2~3 weeks.

My dealer keeps me updated.

You have an issue with your dealer/importer.

I am sure that parts could become unavailable and be on backorder until the next parts run by the manufacturer, but it's up to the dealer to keep you up to date.

Part is "in".

Continuing saga -- and rant.

Got the call last Thursday that the part the dealer ordered in early June (but never checked to see if it was shipped) was finally in. Service guy told me they woud get right on it when the part arrived. I assumed it would be ready Saturday or, giving them a break, possibly Tuesday. I heard nothing.

I called today to find out when I could pick the bike up -- 2 1/2 hour ride away and need to plan logistics. He told me they did not know when they would be able to start it!!!! I could not believe it! They will let me know next Tuesday when they can start!!

I am furious at the mismanagement of promises and the deception -- flat out half truths and incompetence. Thinking about picking up the bike and the parts and trailering it to NC later this month where I live most of the year. I have ridden it 0 miles this summer. What a bust.

Rant done for now.
