swilson Posted July 22, 2012 Posted July 22, 2012 Twice this week I rode in 100 degree temps and noticed when I roll off the throttle RPMs dropped, but not all the way, it still had partial throttle input. With the clutch in, rather than just rolling off the throttle to get to idle, I had to actually roll it towards closed to get it to idle at normal RPMs. Riding in lower temps it behaves normally. I've ridden this bike in high temps many many times and have never experienced this before. Haven't adjusted the throttle cables recently. I did have the gas tank off last week while doing a brake fluid flush. Grabbing the throttle cables they don't appear to be pinched or out of their normal position. Anyone else experience this? Any ideas? 2005 RT, 48k mi.
FlyingFinn Posted July 22, 2012 Posted July 22, 2012 Sticky throttle tube is pretty common, many times the problem manifests itself when the grip heater is on. Does your throttle stick if you turn the grip heater on? If it does, the problem is not with the cables, rather the throttle tube itself is slightly too long and sticks against the bar end weight. If this is your issue, put one washer under the bar end weight to move it slightly further out. __ Mikko
dirtrider Posted July 22, 2012 Posted July 22, 2012 Morning Scott First thing, as mentioned above check the throttle twist grip for enough end play (if too tight either shim the weight out or loosen the throttle housing retaking screws & move the housing inboard. I have also seen the throttle not want to properly return to idle if the cruise control cable is pulled apart slightly at the mid cable adjuster (under the mid cruise cable boot). It doesn't take much tension on that cruise cable to effect a sticking high idle. I have also seen the R/H throttle cable not properly routed over the air cleaner cover. Make sure that cable is properly routed in the cut out.
swilson Posted July 28, 2012 Author Posted July 28, 2012 No issue at the grip. I'll definitely take the plastic off and check cable routing. Thanks for the tip on the cruise cable!
Username Posted July 29, 2012 Posted July 29, 2012 Did you change or check the air filter recently? Cable can easily get caught in the filter housing when putting it back together. Just a thought
