kbgrnbmw Posted July 21, 2012 Posted July 21, 2012 99R1100RT 110K mi Yesterday my RT began to start hard seemed almost like it was either flooded or starved for fuel.Would start after much cranking but seemed to lack the normal power just barely running then would stall. Had run quit low on fuel although has been run much lower many times. Added fuel thinking maybe just low. Also pulled plugs which were much darker in color then normal. It finally started and seemed to have normal power and rode fine. Started and stopped several time before the end of the day with several hours in between with no more problems. Decided to change fuel filter (15K since last change) and plugs with maybe 10K since last change. Bike had sat overnight and most of day. Once again started hard although not as hard as day before with no running problems or restart issue. Parts guy suggested possible weak or failing coil usually keeps a couple on the shelf having seen them be a problem historically in older models and was surprised that given age and miles that I had not replaced at least one already. BTW did have what was called "Sudden Death Syndrome" 20K mi ago and took care of that in the suggest way by replacing the wires from the Hall effect sensors with high temp wire and have had no issues since. So now what does everyone think? Thanks as always for the help it is most appreciated. kbgrnbmw
dirtrider Posted July 21, 2012 Posted July 21, 2012 Morning kbgrnbmw Were you riding in the rain or recently washed the bike? If so that can help us guide you to your problem. What did the exhaust smell like when it was difficult to start? If it smelled real rich (smell of raw gasoline) that could help us identify your problem. --If your bike has a Techlusion aftermarket fuel controller on it & you recently washed the bike or rode it in the rain that would be the first place I looked. If you have the Techlusion then completely disconnect that as a test (a good chance that is your problem) -- If no Techlusion on your bike then your HES acting up again would be near the top of my list. --Possibly an ign coil but that would be w-a-y down my personal list of possible failure points. --Otherwise possibly a load of bad gasoline (unless you installed new gasoline when you replaced the fuel filter). --Or maybe a fuel pressure/fuel flow problem (like a pin hole in an internal fuel tank pressure hose). (if nothing electrical stands out then do a fuel flow test from the fuel return line with the fuel pump relay jumpered to keep the pump running for the test) The more information you can give us on your problem & what's on the bike the better we can guide you to finding your problem.
